Seven Sfcc Students Recognized For Efforts

Seven social/human services students from Spokane Falls Community College have been recognized for their efforts in coordinating a regional conference hosted by the Northwest Organization for Human Service Education. The conference featured numerous forums and workshops on innovation in the delivery of human services.

SFCC student organizers included Sharon Bessermin, Jack Fournier, Curtis Gibson, Rosemary Gilder, Cindy Golden, Cherie Strzelecki and Victory LaSarte.

Eight students enrolled in the Institute for Extended Learning’s vocational upholstery program at Airway Heights Correction Center recently won awards in the 2000 design and craftsmanship contest sponsored by Upholstery Journal. Ron Pearson is the instructor at AHCC. The contest draws entries from upholstery shops and vocational programs in the United States and Canada. The IEL students made a clean sweep of the couch category, with first place going to Ivan Dishon and Louis Buzmancueller and second place to Carl Gholson and Christopher Blake. Gholson also received the third-place award, while Ivan Dishon, Roger Channing and Louis Guzmancuellar claimed honorable mention.

Kenneth Revia and Guzmancueller placed first in the antique chair category, while the team of Revia, Robert Silva and William Taylor received first-place honors for its work in the marine seating category. Finally, Gholson received an honorable mention award for his entry in the auto interior category.

Chris Henderson, Joseph Marshall, Arianne Mott and Michelle Pogue, all of Spokane, have been selected to receive scholarships for the 2000-2001 school year at Eastern Washington University.

Henderson will receive a $1,000 alumni scholarship and is a graduate student majoring in physical therapy. He is the son of Adele Henderson, Spokane, and John Henderson.

Marshall, a 2000 graduate of West Valley High School, has been awarded a $1,500 dean’s scholarship for academic excellence. He is the son of Jim and Patricia Marshall, Spokane, and plans to major in pre-med.

Mott, awarded a $1,500 dean’s scholarship, is a 2000 graduate of University High School. She is the daughter of Greg and Marlene Mott, Spokane, and plans to major in nursing.

Pogue, a 1998 graduate of East Valley High School, was awarded a $1,000 Clarence E. Henning Scholarship for being an outstanding education major. She is the daughter of Raymond Pogue, Newman Lake, and the late Lora Pogue.
