Usc Hands Cougs First Loss

Washington State’s unbeaten record in volleyball ended Thursday night in Los Angeles, courtesy of the undefeated Southern California Trojans.

Janae Henry had a match-high 15 kills and the Trojans (6-0, 1-0) showed their rallying abilities during a 16-14, 15-9, 15-8 win over Washington State (8-1, 0-1) to open the Pacific-10 Conference season.

The Cougars led the first game 11-8 and 14-11, but failed on four attempts to win the game. LaToya Harris nearly had a game-winning ace, but her serve just touched the net.

The Trojans scored eight consecutive points for a 12-4 lead in the middle game. WSU burst out to a 7-4 third-game lead, but USC scored nine consecutive points.

Kristee Porter had 14 kills and Erika Selsor added 37 assists to lead seventh-ranked UCLA (6-3, 1-0) to a 15-8, 15-0, 15-12 Pac-10 win over visiting Washington (4-3, 0-1) at Pauley Pavilion.

Amanda Berg totaled 26 kills and 13 digs to lead Idaho State (5-5) to a 6-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-10 comeback over visiting Eastern Washington in a Big Sky Conference opener at Pocatello.

Angie Hall and Tamara Van Engelen had 10 kills apiece for the Eagles (1-5). Hall and Jessie Wright combined for 24 digs.

EWU had a .400 hitting percentage in the first game, but finished the match at .160.

Women’s golf

Lisette Carter finished as low gross of the field as the SAWGA tournament championship ended its three-day run at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Carter’s 227 score gave her a 16-shot edge in the championship flight. Kathie Durgan, with a 216, was low net of the field.
