WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Head Start begins Oct. 2, and all low-income kids ages 3-5 are eligible for the preschool program. Director Maggie Gutierrez says the program works closely with Othello schools to prepare children, who may be at a disadvantage, for kindergarten. The program is licensed for 280. Grant County Ephrata<’ A pile of rusting hulks is being collected by the Sheriff’s Department in an effort to clean junk cars off private property and illegal dump sites. More than 200 cars, some of them coming in semi-loads, have been dropped off at the free site.

Cars will be accepted today and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lot is at the north end of Ephrata on Highway 28. Please bring title, and if none is available, the county will provide title elimination papers.

Lincoln County Creston

There are 118 students registered for classes - six more than last September. Kindergarten has nine members and a new teacher, Kim Cole. The two largest classes are the seventh and 11th grades, which sport 15 kids in each. The smallest is the first grade with six students.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Farmers will teach a series of classes put on by the WSU Cooperative Extension. The “Livestock Specialties” series will feature information on raising poultry, beef, meat goats and rabbits, sheep and pork. The first workshop will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sadie Halstead Middle School. The topic will be pastured poultry with farmer Dan Griggs, who doesn’t use growth hormones, pesticides or herbicides on his turkey grazing ranch.

Spokane County Deer Park

The Friends of the Deer Park Library used-book sale will be Sept. 29-Oct. 8 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon-4 p.m. Sunday at Deer Park Auto Freight, 2405 E. Crawford. Most books will be 50 cents, with paperback romances $1 a bag. Encyclopedia sets, textbooks and National Geographics will be on sale, too.

Stevens County Kettle Falls

Inventor Donald Wilson has developed a way to use light-emitting diodes in traffic signs so they can be seen through fog. Wilson came up with the idea when he failed to notice a flagger. He decided a safer system must be invented. His idea is available for manufacturers interested in development.

Whitman County

Pullman and Garfield students did better than the state average in the Washington Assessment of Student Learning scores released this week. The test, for fourth-, seventh- and 10th-graders, is designed to review the students’ skills in math, reading, writing and listening.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

The school district needs a trustee to fill the Zone 5 position vacated by Dr. Michael Stone. The term will expire in May. The deadline to apply is Sept. 29. Contact Gayle Wemhoff at the district office.

Bonner County Priest Lake

The Indian Creek bridge will be replaced Oct. 8-14, according to the Idaho Department of Lands. Indian Cape Horn and Pinto Point roads will be closed and there will be no access to those areas.

Boundary County Moyie Springs

Twin Rivers Canyon Resort hosted the annual Habitat for Humanity Picnic and Auction, raising about $5,400. The money will help finish a third home and possibly start a fourth. Habitat for Humanity uses volunteer labor and donated materials to build homes for the disadvantaged.

Kootenai County Lake Coeur d’Alene

The Gertrude Hanson Memorial Viewing Platform will be dedicated at 5 p.m. today at the platform at Mica Bay - even if it rains. A potluck dinner and star-gazing program will be at the Bureau of Land Management’s boating campground. Bring a dish. Plates, utensils and drinks will be provided.

Latah County Potlatch

Residents can write about their outdoors experiences for a creative writing contest, sponsored by the Potlatch Friends of the Library. There are no strict format guidelines, but the piece must be original. There are four age groups; 5-9, 10-12, 13-17 and 18 and over. Shoshone County Kellogg

The Kellogg School District committee, made up of citizens from all areas in the district, is recommending Canyon Elementary School be closed. The committee will have a public hearing at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Kellogg Middle School cafeteria. Anyone wishing to speak - for up to three minutes - needs to register.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

The annual Nordicfest Lutefiskeating contest was won by Mayor Tony Berget. John Ostman finished second and Kevin Halsey came in third. Contestants are given a bowl of lutefisk with melted butter and the first one to finish it wins. Mike Turner, 13, of Kalispell won last year’s contest.
