Pittsburgh 12, Penn State 0: John Turman threw for 272 yards and a touchdown and Nick Lotz hit a pair of field goals as the Panthers (3-0) defeated the Nittany Lions (1-3) at Pittsburgh.
In the last scheduled game of the series between the intrastate rivals, Penn State’s offense was limited to 64 yards on the ground, and key sacks and penalties kept the Nittany Lions from threatening.
Pittsburgh has two of the last three shutouts against Penn State. The Nittany Lions lost to Michigan 27-0 in 1998. Pittsburgh won 10-0 in 1987.
Temple 31, Bowling Green 14: Devin Scott threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns as the Owls (2-1) defeated the Falcons (0-3) at Philadelphia.

Mississippi 12, Vanderbilt 7: Deuce McAllister rushed for 143 yards on 17 carries, including 121 yards in the first half, as the Rebels (2-1, 1-1 SEC) defeated the Commodores (0-3, 0-2 SEC) at Nashville, Tenn.
Kentucky 41, Indiana 34: Matt Layow scooped up a fumble by Indiana quarterback Antwaan Randle El and returned it 21 yards for the game-winning score as the Wildcats (2-1) defeated the Hoosiers (0-2) at Lexington, Ky.
North Carolina State 41, SMU 0: Freshman quarterback Philip Rivers, the nation’s leader in total offense and passing yardage, was 16 for 24 for 271 yards and two TDs to lead the Wolfpack (3-0) over the Mustangs (1-2) at Raleigh, N.C.
SMU quarterback Josh McCown threw four interceptions and was sacked seven times.
Virginia 26, Duke 10: Dan Ellis passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Billy McMullen, as the Cavaliers (2-1, 1-0 ACC) defeated the Blue Devils (0-3, 0-1) at Durham, N.C.
East Carolina 37, Tulane 17: David Garrard threw two long scoring passes in the second half and ran for 112 yards as the Pirates (2-1, 1-0 C-USA) defeated the Green Wave (0-2, 0-1) at Greenville, N.C.

Minnesota 34, Baylor 9: Thomas Tapeh ran for 183 yards and caught a touchdown pass to lead the Golden Gophers (2-1) over the Bears (1-1) at Waco, Texas.
Texas Tech 26, Louisiana-Lafayette 0: At Lubbock, Texas, Tim Baker scored on a 2-yard pass and set up another touchdown with a 71-yard gain on a screen pass, leading the Red Raiders (4-0) past the Ragin’ Cajuns (0-3) at Lubbock, Texas.
Oklahoma St. 23, SW Texas 0: At Stillwater, Okla., Reggie White ran for 130 yards and scored a touchdown as the Cowboys (2-0) defeated the Division I-AA Bobcats (1-2) for their first shutout in three years.
Tulsa 23, Rice 16: Donald Shoals returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown and Tulsa capitalized on three Rice fumbles as the Golden Hurricane (1-2, 1-0 WAC) defeated the Owls (1-2, 0-1) at Houston.
Texas A&M 45, Texas-El Paso 17: Ja’Mar Toombs scored three second-half touchdowns as the Aggies (2-1) rallied from a 17-14 halftime deficit to defeat the Miners (1-2) at College Station, Texas.
Houston 31, Army 30: Houston took the lead on a touchdown pass with 1:17 remaining, then Army’s Brendan Mullen missed a 32-yard field goal with 6 seconds left, giving the Cougars (1-2) a victory over the Cadets (0-3).

Iowa State 24, Iowa 14: Sage Rosenfels passed for 228 yards and rushed for two touchdowns as the Cyclones (3-0) defeated the Hawkeyes (0-3) at Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa State has won three in a row in the series for the first time since 1980-82.
Kansas 23, Alabama-Birmingham 20: At Lawrence, Kan., Joe Garcia, after missing an extra point, kicked a 50-yard field goal that boosted the Jayhawks (1-1) past the Blazers (1-1).
West
San Jose State 47, Southern Utah 7: Deonce Whitaker ran for 147 yards and Marcus Arroyo threw three TD passes as the Spartans (2-1) defeated the Thunderbirds (1-2) at San Jose, Calif.
Wyoming 31, Central Michigan 10: Nate Scott rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns, including a school-record 95-yard romp, leading the Cowboys (1-2) over the Chippewas (1-2) at Laramie, Wyo.
