Bryan Short Takes Part In Scholars Program

Bryan Short, a student at Gonzaga Prep, recently took part in the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program in Washington, D.C., in July. More than 400 high school juniors and seniors from 48 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Canada and the Honduras spent a week with government leaders and learning about the democratic process firsthand.

Paul Decker, a member of Boy Scout Troop 210, recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout which is the highest award given by the Boy Scouts of America.

Decker, son of Dr. Gordon Decker and Raeann Decker, Spokane, graduated with honors from Mead High School. For his Eagle Scout project he constructed three 6-foot by 12-foot trail map frames for Mount Spokane.

Kathleen Burgard and Heather Thomason have each earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Their project consisted of planning and constructing new playground equipment for St. Paschal’s School.

Burgard, daughter of Daniel and Karen Burgard, is a senior at University High School where she is involved in marching band and the National Honor Society. She is a member of Girl Scout Troop 585 and has been a member of the Girl Scouts for 11 years.

Thomason is the daughter of Mark and Pam Thomason and a member of Girl Scout Troop 78. She is a senior at University High School where she is involved in track, the marching band and Spanish Club.

Alex Petrin, a member of Boy Scout Troop 80, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts of America. His Eagle project involved working with the Gleneden Homeowners Association in conjunction with the Spokane County Parks Department in planting over 1,000 trees and shrubs in the new Gleneden Park on Oct. 30, 1999.

Petrin is the son of Joe and Janice Petrin, Spokane.
