The Mennonite Church is holding a Country Auction and Relief Sale on Oct. 7. The auction will feature quilts, antiques, collectibles and other items. German foods such as sausage, kraut ranza and fresh apple cider from an antique press will be for sale. All money goes to foreign missions. Take exit 206 off I-90 and follow the signs.

Animal lovers are hoping to put up a building for the Forget-Me-Not Animal Shelter. Currently, a handful of kindhearted locals take care of abandoned pets in their homes. The organization wants to build a proper shelter to house dogs and cats as they await new homes. The group is seeking partners in that mission.

Memberships are available for between $10 and $1,000 to help house, spay, neuter, care for and find families for abandoned animals. For information, call (509) 779-4392.

Ephrata

Enrollment at Ephrata schools didn’t meet expectations. The school district will be tightening its belt because only 2,190 full-time students signed up for school - 62 shy of budget projections. In Soap Lake, 16 fewer students enrolled than administrators had hoped for. A bright spot in the area is Wilson Creek. This rural school has about 126 students in kindergarten through high school this year. That district budgeted for 115 kids.

The city has voted to give volunteer EMTs a helping hand. Eight local residents have signed up to take Emergency Medical Technician training. The city will pay the $250 fee in exchange for dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers. The trainees are Dan Camp Jr., Wade Starzman, Jeff Starzman, Rob Coffman, Mike Peterson, Keith Faul, Lori Goodman and Sonya Clark.

Pend Oreille County

Dr. Reagan Andrade has announced she is leaving her local practice. Andrade says she cannot afford to stay because a federally funded incentive program to get doctors to rural areas is out of cash. Andrade says she had counted on the $50,000 grant to help pay student loans. The local medical community tried to raise the money to allow her to stay, but fell short.

Spokane

A master plan for restoring Spokane’s lost gardens at Pioneer Park will be the subject of a public meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Corbin Art Center, 507 W. 7th. Leaders of the Corbin and Moore-Turner Heritage Garden Project want to rebuild the gardens of entrepreneurs D.C. Corbin, F. Rockwood Moore, U.S. Sen. George Turner and his wife, Bertha, in the woodland below Cliff Drive.

Stevens County

Kettle Falls

The Stevens County Public Works Department is offering a free scrap metal dump day Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the county landfill in Kettle Falls. Scrap metal must be clean and come from a household source. Large appliances will be collected but must be cleaned out properly. Rototillers and lawnmowers must have all fluids drained. The county says no garbage will be accepted.

The Neill Public Library is offering story times for toddlers and preschoolers this fall. Toddler Time for 2- and 3-year-olds starts each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., today through Nov. 8. Preschool Story Time will be Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., Thursday through Nov. 9.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade may participate in a weekly program “Adventures in Odyssey” to be presented at the Church of the Nazarene, 3 miles south of St. Maries on U.S. Highway 3. Registration is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight at the church.

Sandpoint

The Forest Service will temporarily close four roads in the Sandpoint area to provide a less crowded elk hunt. Gates on the Schafer Peak Road 1063, Green Mountain Road 1050, Peep-a-Day Road 2401 and Powerline Road 2706 will be closed today through Nov. 1.

Bonners Ferry

Back to School Night at Bonners Ferry High School will give parents a first-hand look at what their children will experience at school. Parents can attend an abbreviated session of each class and meet with teachers. The event is set from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the school.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library foundation is hoping at least 100 baskets are donated for their annual fund-raiser, A Tisket, A Tasket, A Literary Basket. The fund-raiser is at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. Tickets cost $25 and are on sale at the library.

Latah County

The Lena Whitmore Elementary School is asking residents to bring General Mills box tops to the school. The school gets 10 cents for every box top as part of the General Mills Box Tops for Education fund-raising program.

Shoshone County

Camp Lutheran is putting on a photo tour later this month. The tour costs $58 and includes two nights lodging at Shoshone Base Camp and five meals. The Mountains, Missions, and Miners Fall Colors Photo Tour will be Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 and is presented by Inland Northwest Lutheran Outdoor Ministries and the Inland Empire Chapter of the Photographic Society of America. U.S. Army Capt. Richard Hodgson, Maj. Joe Cornnell and Lt. Col. Jim Mathis made a special trip to the Achievements headquarters recently. The three, who had been working on wildfires on the Kootenai National Forest, went to thank the organization of people with developmental disabilities for baking 24 dozen cookies for the soldiers. Mathis presented a certificate of appreciation for Achievements’ outstanding support during Operation Wildfire.
