Michael Card Performs Distinctive Christian Music
There’s contemporary Christian music, the jangly bubblegum-pop stuff that doesn’t sound much different than secular rock ‘n’ roll.
And then there’s the music produced by biblical scholar Michael Card, contemplative, Scripture-based stories that sound as much like mainstream pop as a Sunday sermon sounds like a car commercial.
“My purpose, as I see it, is to preach the message of the Bible so others can understand it and take hold of who Christ is and what he’s done for us all,” Card has said. “The true measure of success will ultimately be our ability to help others.”
Card’s musical career began some two decades ago, when his pastor asked him to write a song while earning a master’s degree in biblical studies at Western Kentucky University.
The singer-songwriter/guitarist has since released 20 recordings, with his latest CD, “Soul Anchor,” due out Oct. 31. The new album will focus on the book of Hebrews.
Card’s work has earned him five Dove Awards, the Grammys of Christian music.
He also has written or co-written nine books. His 1990 book, “Sleep Sound in Jesus,” was nominated for a C.S. Lewis Children’s Book Award.
