B.K. `Bud’ McDonald Hayden. Idaho

A celebration of the life of B.K. “Bud” McDonald, 68, will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the family home in Hayden. Private burial will be held at a later date. Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McDonald, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He grew up in Coeur d’Alene and graduated from high school there in 1950. He then received a degree in business administration from the University of Idaho, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Mr. McDonald was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and served at Fort Benning, Ga., and in Germany.

He later took a job with Guy F. Atkinson Co. in Long Beach, Calif., and in 1958 he married Virginia Staley.

The couple moved to Lake Oswego, Ore. in 1968, and he worked for Donald Drake Construction in Portland.

He became a partner with William Bugge Jr. in 1971, and they opened Columbia West Materials and Constructors in Portland and Longview, Wash.

Mr. McDonald returned to Coeur d’Alene in 1979 and started Lakeshore Construction Inc. before retiring in 1999 due to poor health.

He was involved with the University of Idaho Vandal Booster Club, Associated General Contractors of Idaho, Associated Builders and Contractors of Washington. Rotary International, Post Falls Chamber of Commerce and the Hayden Lake Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Lisa Rimsa of Milpitas, Calif., and Nancy Bergdorf of Everett; and two grandsons, Alexander and Christian.

Eva Branson Kellogg

Service for Eva Branson, 92, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Silver Valley Church of the Nazarene in Kellogg. Burial will be at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Branson, who was born in Beulah, N.D., died Thursday.

She moved to Kellogg in 1945 from Billings, Mont., and worked at area restaurants and motels. She also was a nurses’ aid at Wallace Hospital.

She married George Branson in 1958. He died in 1973.

Mrs. Branson was involved in crocheting and church activities.

Survivors include four children, Rolen Wegner of Lynnwood, Wash., Idella Dingman of Coeur d’Alene, Jenet Vickerman of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Betty Snyder of Benton, Ill.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

John Shanklin Spokane

Service for John W. Shanklin, 64, will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Shanklin, who was born in Lebanon, Ind., died Wednesday. He was a 21-year Spokane resident.

He had served in the Air Force and was a plane refueler for Spokane Airways.

Mr. Shanklin was a member of Whitworth Presbyterian Church.

His first wife, Dolores, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; two daughters, Diane Shanklin and Stacey Wareham; three stepsons, Bruce Batch Jr., Bryan Batch and Shane Rowe; a stepdaughter, Kimberlia Rowe; two sisters, Janet Martinez and Edith Lewis; two grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Calvert `Dee’ Nelson Newport, Wash.

Service for Calvert “Dee” Nelson, 62, will be at 11 a.m. today at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Priest River, Idaho. Another service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cherry Lane Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Meridian, Idaho. Burial will follow at the Meridian Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nelson, who was born in Salmon, Idaho, died Wednesday.

He graduated from Gooding (Idaho) High School and worked in the food service industry. He helped to establish Grandma’s Cookies and started a milk route while living in Boise.

Mr. Nelson moved to Spokane in 1988 and worked for Royal Distributing. In 1992 he married Janet Knoke, and they moved to Newport where he was a manager at the Hico Convenience Store.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as its second counselor in the Bishopric of the Newport Ward. He also served in various missionary offices.

His wife of 37 years, Maxine, died in 1991.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Connie Balciar of Quincy, Wash., and Patty Packard, Melody Mixon and Andrea Williams, all of Ogden, Utah; a son, Drew Nelson of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Janette Lorton of Newport and Michelle Meidinger of Arlee, Mont.; two stepsons, Jason Spade of Spokane and Michael Spade Jr. of Newport; his mother, Ardella Nelson of Kuna, Idaho; two brothers, David Nelson of Kuna and Jim Nelson of Payette, Idaho; a sister, Gwen Schenk of Mountain Home, Idaho; and 33 grandchildren.

Edward Miles Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Edward Lynn Miles, 76, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church in Newport. Military inurnment will follow at the Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Miles, who was born in Pierre, S.D., died Wednesday. He was 74-year resident of Newport.

He attended school in Newport and served in the Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 due to a serious injury.

Mr. Miles was married to Lorraine Jones in 1947, and they owned and operated a shoe and liquor store in Newport for 30 years.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, Newport Eagles Lodge and the Newport Kiwanis Club, where he served as past lieutenant governor. He was a past fire chief for District No. 6 and instrumental in starting the Junior Firefighters Program and had served on the draft board.

His wife died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Vickie Miles of Newport and Marion Johnson of Sandpoint; a brother, Eugene Miles of Yakima; five sisters, Virginia Bridges, Hazel Bauer and Polly Miller, all of Newport, Lila McKiney of Veteran, Wyo., and Maxine Pitts of Oldtown, Idaho; three grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Hospital Oncology Department or to the Newport Kiwanis.

Alfred `Bud’ Reetz Cheney

Visitation for Alfred “Bud” Reetz, 84, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Reetz, who was born in Fairfield, N.D., died Thursday. He was a longtime Spokane and Cheney resident.

He worked at Nally’s Potato Chip Factory and was later an autobody repairman for Rouse’s.

Mr. Reetz was a charter member of Four Corners Grange 1097.

His wife of 60 years, Olive, died in April.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Reetz, and two daughters, Judy Richards and Linda Grim, all of Cheney; a sister, Ethel Palmer of Renton, Wash.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eulice `Leon’ Evans Newport, Wash.

Graveside service for Eulice “Leon” Evans, 79, will be at 2 p.m. today at Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Evans, who was born in Peel, Ark., died Wednesday.

In 1939 he entered the Navy and served during World War II aboard the USS Enterprise. He retired after 20 years in 1959.

Mr. Evans was married to June McMillan in 1947. After he retired from the military he worked as a mechanical superintendent for construction companies including Ebasco, Bechtel and Morrison-Knutson. He retired in 1983 and moved to Newport.

He was a past member of the Moose Lodge and served in the Fleet Reserve.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, William Evans of Salt Lake City and James Evans of Riverbank, Calif.; three daughters, Pamela Cate of Wenatchee, Tamara Haynes of North Bend, Wash., and Jillann Qureshi of London; two sisters, Bonnie Richey of Lead Hill, Ark., and Betty Rose of Peel; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Christina Thompson Spokane

Visitation for Christina P. Thompson, 20, will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Methodist Church in LaCrosse, Wash. Service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at the LaCrosse Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Thompson, who was born in Colfax, died Wednesday of cystic fibrosis.

She was a 1998 graduate of LaCrosse High School, where she was the varsity basketball manager her junior year.

After graduation, Miss Thompson worked at Cookies Place, which is now Judy’s Cafe, where she waited tables.

She moved to Spokane two years ago.

Survivors include her parents, Allan and Leslie Thompson, and a brother, Brian Thompson, all of LaCrosse; and her grandmother, Pearl Thompson of Colfax.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Spokane or to the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane.

Ada Miller Tucson, Ariz.

Service for Ada K. Miller, 83, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Miller, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Monday. She was a 50-year Spokane resident.

She was a homemaker and a member of North Hill Christian Church and Disciples of Christ.

Mrs. Miller moved to Tucson four years ago.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne; a daughter, Judy Roedel of Tucson; a son, Jim Miller of Bellingham; a sister, Roberta Wormington of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Gerald Johnson Spokane

Memorial service for Gerald L. Johnson, 61, will be held at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Williston, N.D., died Wednesday. He was a 21-year Spokane resident.

He graduated from Williston High School in 1957 and married Charlene Krueger in 1962.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jay, Les and Travis Johnson, all of Spokane; three brothers, Lyle Johnson of Spokane, Delmar Johnson of Selah, Wash., and Lester Johnson of Seattle; a sister, Bonnie Bartlette of Selah; and three grandchildren.
