Alienation: A Serial Story Following Orders
PART EIGHT
Kade would indeed come out alive. Gael, who followed seconds later, wouldn’t.
The two met on the other side of the wormhole, shivering and searching each other’s faces for answers. They found themselves in a field. It was totally black except for a blue moon on the horizon.
Soon they each heard voices demanding action, saying exactly the same thing: “Kill and be saved.” Within minutes, it was over, and Kade was the victor.
A thin sliver of light appeared, then widened and stretched until a tall, thin man dressed in black stepped out, as casually as if he were stepping from behind a bedroom door.
“Congratulations, you have won. Now you will receive your reward,” the man said.
Kade didn’t have time to ask about the reward. The man came within inches of Kade’s face, turned his head to the side and exposed his neck.
“This man is a vampire, and my reward is being in his service,” Kade thought, seconds before he felt the bite.
Now, Kade realized, time would be meaningless. After minutes - or was it eons? - had passed and Kade had finished his transformation, Gael’s body was swallowed up by a sliver of light. The tall man looked to Kade.
“Servant, you must never allow yourself out into the sunlight or to come into contact with crosses. Stakes will have no effect on you. Neither will physical damage of any kind,” the man said.
Kade wanted to fight but couldn’t. It seemed as though his mind had been confiscated. His only option was to agree. “Yes, master,” he said.
At this, the wormhole opened again, and Kade was shoved through by an unseen force. A few rays of light were coming from the east . Kade stood up, then ran toward the first building he saw. It was anyone’s guess as to where he had landed. Wherever he was, the place appeared to be densely populated. Several shadowy figures stirred in the faint morning light.
Once Kade reached the building, he fell to his stomach, avoiding the light. He crawled a few feet, found a basement window and smashed it. He pulled himself inside.
He found himself in a room that looked like a wine cellar. Spider webs covered everything. He ran to a closet and locked himself inside.
