Obituaries

Henry Burnette Spokane

Service for Henry E. “Hank” Burnette, 75, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Full Gospel Mission Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 73-year Spokane resident, Mr. Burnette died Sept. 21. He was born in Weed, Calif.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1944 and served in the Navy during World War II.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood from 1956 to 1962, and also worked in maintenance at W.T. Grant from 1962 until it closed in the mid-1970s.

Mr. Burnette worked as a driver for Consolidated Freightways before retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Teamsters Union.

Survivors include a son, Mark Burnette of Colbert; two stepsons, Kenneth and Tim Brown, a stepdaughter, Carol Baker, and his mother, Lillian Burnette, all of Spokane; three brothers, Robert and James Burnette, both of Spokane, and John Burnette of Citrus Heights, Calif.; eight sisters, Evelyn, Mary and Sally Burnette and Juanita Leslie, all of Spokane, Janet Burnette of Seattle, Marva Robinson and Marcella James, both of Oakland, Calif., and Franceda Nightingale of Detroit; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogers High School, the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Heart Association.

James Mickey Spokane

Memorial service for James Robert Mickey, 53, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Private inurnment will precede the service at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Mickey died Sept. 19 while visiting in Las Vegas.

He graduated from North Central High School in 1964, and received a Purple Heart while serving in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

He worked as a sheet metal installer for Barton Heart and Air Conditioning in Spokane.

Mr. Mickey was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 45.

Survivors include a son, Brian Mickey of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a daughter, Jennifer McGrath of Spokane; a brother, Max Mickey of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sisters, Nancy Spear and Julie Rector, both of Spokane; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rudy Vosholler Spokane

Funeral Mass for Rudy H. Vosholler, 84, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Vosholler died Saturday.

He grew up in the Peaceful Valley and Minnehaha areas.

Mr. Vosholler was co-owner of Northwest Plating Co., and also managed the electro-plating department at Columbia Lighting, before retiring in 1980.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rita; three daughters, Judy Bumgarner, Joan Knutson and Lynn Finkel; a sister, Bernice Wegman; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poor Clare Nuns.

Ella `Ree’ McGee Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Visitation for Ella “Ree” McGee, 72, will be held Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. McGee, who was born in Gainesville, Mo., died Tuesday.

She married Willis McGee in 1949. They lived in Illinois for two years before traveling throughout the country while he worked building various dams.

They moved to Mica Flats near Coeur d’Alene 25 years ago and settled in Dalton Gardens in 1995.

Mrs. McGee was a member of the Dalton Community Pinochle Group and was active in embroidery.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Galloway and Brenda Babb, both of Coeur d’Alene; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Brian and Kat; and one great-granddaughter, JoAnna.

Kathleen Obenland Spokane

Visitation for Kathleen Marie “Kay” (Gies) Obenland, 58, will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Colbert. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Obenland, who was born in St. Ignatius, Mont., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in St. Ignatius and from Kinman Business College in Spokane.

In 1963 she married Richard Obenland, and they moved to Spokane in 1974.

Mrs. Obenland worked as a supervisor for the Spokane County Auditor’s Office for 27 years. She retired in January.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Steven Obenland of Spokane; a daughter, Christine Harbison of Newman Lake; seven brothers, John Gies of Mead, James Gies of Colville, Wash., Daniel Gies of Missoula, William Gies of San Francisco, Stanley Gies of Winnemucca, Nev., Charles Gies of Minden, Neb., and Raymond Gies of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four sisters, Jeannie Swanson of Spokane, Linda Gies of Arlee, Mont., Mary Gies of Missoula and Shirley Tennison of Kearny, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Thelma Haynie Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Thelma K. Haynie, 97, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash., Burial will follow at Mount View Cemetery in Davenport.

Mrs. Haynie, who was born in The Dalles, Ore., died Sunday.

She was a longtime former resident of Davenport and worked as a cook for the Davenport School District for 12 years.

Mrs. Haynie moved to Chewelah in 1997.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Davenport and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her husband, Harold, died in 1980.

Survivors include three sons, William Haynie of Chewelah, Bob Haynie of Odessa, Wash., and Gerald Haynie of Tacoma; four daughters, Lois Mosby of Chewelah, Pat Christman of Davenport, and Janis Wacker and Haroldine Debord, both of Yuma, Ariz.; 31 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.

Del Wilson Spokane

Memorial service for Del K. Wilson, 78, was held Tuesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

A 38-year Spokane resident, Mr. Wilson died Sept. 21. He was born in Spokane.

He graduated from North Central High School and Cheney Normal School.

During World War II he served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific.

Mr. Wilson had worked for United Airline and the Washington State Patrol. He also had worked as a bus driver for Greyhound Bus and as a teacher for public and parochial schools in Seattle. He also was a bus driver for Maplewood Gardens. He worked as a complaint driver for The Spokesman-Review from 1988 until he retired in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Leslie Stablein of Yakima; and one grandson.

Venus Storment Four Lakes

Service for Venus O. (Fletcher) Storment, 93, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cheney Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at the Marshall Cemetery.

Mrs. Storment, who was born in Lamesa, Texas, died Sunday.

She married Hollis Storment in 1940, and they lived on the Storment family farm in Winona, Wash., until moving to the Spokane Valley in 1962. They moved to Four Lakes in 1966.

Mrs. Storment was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Norman Storment of Four Lakes and Glenn Storment of Kent, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Anthony Cocuzza Spokane

No service will be held for Anthony P. Cocuzza, 29. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Melbourne, Fla., Mr. Cocuzza died Sept. 21.

His family moved to Spokane when he was an infant.

He worked as a waiter for Pieroni’s Deli and the Ridpath Hotel.

Survivors include his girlfriend, Shelly Halazon; a son, Chase Cocuzza, and a daughter, Courtney Cocuzza, both of Spokane; his mother, Wilma Cocuzza of Deer Park; and two sisters, Serena Gamble and Marie Wright, both of Spokane.

JoAnn (Riewe) Armstrong Spokane

Visitation for JoAnn D. (Riewe) Armstrong, 58, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Private burial will precede the service at Riverside Memorial Park.

A 16-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Armstrong died Tuesday. She was born in Mankato, Minn.

She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Mankato State University.

Mrs. Armstrong worked as a volunteer coordinator for District 81 for 10 years.

She was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Mission League and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She also was a member and building chairperson for Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Armstrong was active with the Spokane Sister City Program.

Survivors include her husband, Bill; two sons, Michael and Randy Armstrong; her parents, Harold and Vivian Riewe; two brothers, Curtis and Daryl Riewe; and eight grandchildren.

Kari Courtney Spokane

Memorial service for Kari (Midtlyng) Courtney, 43, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Courtney, who was born in Fargo, N.D., died Sept. 20.

She graduated from East High School in Lincoln, Neb., and moved to Spokane in 1975.

Mrs. Courtney graduated from Whitworth College in 1983.

She taught piano and worked as a substitute teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Howard; two sons, Jason and Daniel Wasinger of Columbia Falls, Mont.; her parents, Home and Yvonne Midtlyng of Spokane; and two brothers, David Midtlyng of Jacksonville, Ore., and Mark Midtlyng of Meridian, Idaho.

Ross Bray Spokane

Memorial service for Ross Edwin Bray, 80, will be at noon Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Bray, who was born in Livingston, Mont., died Monday.

His family moved to Spokane when he was a child.

He served in the Air Force during World War II, the Berlin Airlift and the Korean War. He retired after 21 years of service.

After retiring he worked in labor relations with the Associated Industries of Spokane.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marjorie; two sons, David and Steven Bray; a daughter, Wendy Jacobsen; a sister, Barbara Rosauer; seven grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Leamer Cole Hayden, Idaho

Visitation for Clarence Leamer Cole, 81, will be held today from 11 a.m. to noon at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. Service will follow at 1 p.m. at the chapel with a reception to follow at the Yates Hayden Gathering Center. Burial will take place at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Cole, who was born in Fillmore, Mo., died Monday.

He grew up and attended school in Fillmore.

He served with the Army during World War II and worked as a truck driver after his military discharge. He lived in Minnesota before settling in Spokane.

He married Elizabeth Turner in 1968, and the couple moved to Bozeman, Mont., where they lived for 20 years.

They moved to Hayden in 1988. She died in 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Cole of Union Star, Mo., and Anthony Turner of Hayden; five daughters, Nancy Coon of Omaha, Neb., Betty Jo Cole of Hayden, Cindy Kaminski of Reardan, Wash., and Annette Hrinik and Robin Brammer, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Frances Henson Sprague, Wash.

Graveside service for Frances Anna (Mundell) Henson, 77, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Macabee Cemetery in Sprague. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Henson, who was born in the Blue Mountains of Oregon died Monday.

In 1945 she moved to Washington state from Oregon, first settling in Cheney and later moving to Sprague.

Mrs. Henson worked as a nurses aid in Cheney and Ritzville before going to nursing school in Moses Lake in 1964.

She worked as a licensed practical nurse in Ritzville, Medical Lake and Spokane. She retired in the late 1970s.

Survivors include a son, Lonnie Henson of Sprague; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.

Audrey King Spokane

No service will be held for Audrey C. King, 80, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King, who was born in Spirit Lake, Idaho, died Tuesday.

She graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1938 and married James King in 1941.

The couple lived in Coeur d’Alene before moving to Spokane 50 years ago.

She was a homemaker and attended Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. King enjoyed fishing, crocheting, sewing and gardening.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years; a son, James King of Everett; a daughter, Anita King of Newport, Wash.; two nieces and one nephew.

Miles Devore Spokane

Visitation for Miles S. Devore, 69, will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will follow at 3 p.m. at Community Bible Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 27-year Spokane resident, Mr. Devore died Monday. He was born in Detroit.

He served in the Army during the 1950s, stationed in Germany, where he attended Heidelberg University.

Mr. Devore owned and operated various businesses, including Devore and Son’s Body Shop. From 1991 to 1996 he worked as a Realtor for James S. Black and Tomlinson Black.

He was a member of Community Bible Church.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Geri; eight sons, Mike, Mark, Matt, Marty, Mitch, Marvin, Maxwell and Marshall Devore, all of Spokane; two daughters, Michelle Coker and Melissa Devore, both of Spokane; a brother, William Devore of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

Jerry Booth Spokane

Memorial service for Jerry Booth, 59, will held at a later date at the family home. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Booth, who was born in Toledo, Wash., died Sunday.

He was a 22-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Booth owned and operated Your Quik Stop.

He was a member of the Rotary Club, the Lilac Association, the Elks Lodge and the Teamsters Union.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Georgine; five sons, John, James and Joseph Bernhardt, all of Spokane, James Booth of Vancouver, Wash., and Joel Booth of Denver; a daughter, Julie Marsh of Lacey, Wash.; his parents, Bud and Roberta Booth of Longview, Wash.; a brother, Terry Booth of Kelso, Wash.; a sister, Kathie Wilson of Delaware; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Carl Mischke Medical Lake

Memorial service for Carl Campbell Mischke, 47, was held Sept. 21 at Open Door Congregational Church in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mischke, who was born in Redfield, S.D., died Sept. 16.

He worked with the Federal Census Bureau on the 2000 Census in Seattle.

Mr. Mischke lived in Deer Park for more than 20 years until recently moving to Medical Lake.

He had worked as a mechanic for Mechanics Pride in Spokane.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Mischke of Deer Park; four sons, Matthew and Nicholas Mischke and Jeff Miller, all of Spokane, and Lucas Mischke of Deer Park; a daughter, Elizabeth Mischke of Deer Park; a brother, Calvin Mischke of Bigfork, Mont.; and three grandchildren.
