St. Francis explained

In honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Wednesday, the Catholic Studies program at Gonzaga University will present “Francis of Assisi and the Problem of Poverty.”

The free public lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Jepson Center auditorium on campus.

St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order, is well known for his renunciation of property ownership in the 13th century. His strict adherence to his vow of poverty caused widespread debate about the ownership of property.

The lecture will explain Francis’ views and the debate that followed.

Researcher to lead seminar

George Barna, president of the Barna Research Group, will be in Spokane to lead a seminar for church leaders and their staff. The seminar is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 17 at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road.

Topics to be discussed include rechurching the unchurched, growing true disciples of Jesus, developing effective lay leadership teams and evaluating your church’s ministry.

The cost is $105, with an additional $7 charge for lunch. Advance registration is required.
