Yankees 9, Orioles 7: At New York, Alex Rodriguez homered for the third straight day, Hideki Matsui keyed a five-run fourth with a two-run double and New York beat Baltimore. Orlando Hernandez (3-0) allowed nine hits and struck out nine in five innings, and Mariano Rivera got three outs for his major league-leading 37th save in 40 chances.
Twins 4, Red Sox 3: At Minneapolis, Johan Santana (10-6) struck out 12, one more than Pedro Martinez, as Minnesota beat Boston. Martinez tied Roger Clemens’ club record with his 68th game with 10 or more strikeouts. New shortstop Orlando Cabrera made a key error in his Boston debut, but homered in his first at-bat with Boston.
Athletics 4, Rangers 1: At Arlington, Texas, Mark Redman pitched seven strong innings, Eric Chavez homered, and Oakland beat Texas to increase its West Division lead over the slumping Rangers.
White Sox 6, Tigers 4: At Detroit, Ben Davis and Aaron Rowand homered, and Freddy Garcia pitched into the eighth inning to help Chicago snap its season-high seven-game losing streak by defeating Detroit.
Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Dewon Brazelton gave up one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings, and Aubrey Huff hit a two-run homer as Tampa Bay beat Toronto.
Royals 8, Indians 7: At Kansas City, Mo., John Buck’s three-run homer capped a four-run fourth inning, and Kansas City held on to beat Cleveland.
