Wesley Kuhl

Spokane

Service for Wesley Clarence “We” Kuhl, 86, will be today at 5 p.m. at Unity Church, 2900 S. Bernard St., in Spokane. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kuhl, who was born in Billings, Mont., died Friday.

During the Depression, he worked as a caddy at a local golf course and later joined the Navy as a teenager. He served in the South Pacific as a seaman on the USS Nevada and married Elsa Cain in 1940.

Mr. Kuhl left the Navy early in 1941 and re-enlisted following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He later moved his family to Hawaii and served during World War II as an aviation machinist’s mate specializing in reciprocating engines. He also became a helicopter mechanic.

Following the war, he continued in the Navy and completed a 20-year career in San Diego in 1956.

Mr. Kuhl obtained a barber’s license in 1958 and moved to Moses Lake and operated Kuhl’s Barber Service on Third Avenue.

He began studying the art and business of men’s hairstyling and opened the first men’s hairstyle shop in Spokane in 1965.

His shop, Emry’s Barber Shop Lounge, was in the basement of Emry’s Men’s Clothing Store in downtown Spokane.

Mr. Kuhl left Emry’s in the mid-1970s and opened 10-17 Hairstyling in Spokane’s Garland District and expanded his clientele to include women.

He later lived in California and Kentucky before returning to Spokane in 1990.

Mr. Kuhl was active in refurbishing travel trailers and woodworking.

He enjoyed golf and fixing things.

Survivors include three children, K.C. Kuhl of Lemon Grove, Calif., Richard “Joe” Kuhl of Issaquah, Wash., and Barb Davis of Newman Lake; a sister, Neoma Wilson of Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Cindy Burge

Medical Lake

Memorial service for Cindy Burge, 40, will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Deep Creek Farm. Private burial will be at the Reardan Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Burge died Wednesday in Missoula from injuries suffered during a riding competition in the Kalispell, Mont., area. She was born in Ellensburg.

She graduated from Cheney High School, where she was student body president and played on the basketball team.

She later graduated from Eastern Washington University.

When she was 18, she finished second in the North American Junior Championships for riding.

As a junior rider she was a four-time member of the team representing the Pacific Northwest at the International Young Riders Championships, winning the Individual Silver medal in 1982, and was the team’s 2004 coach for the upcoming championships.

Ms. Burge developed her parents’ horse farm into a premier competition center, where in June they hosted more than 300 American and Canadian competitors at the 23rd annual Deep Creek Horse Trials.

She was a coach in the Pony Clubs program, hosting camps at the family farm, and serving as a judge for the 4-H program.

The U.S. Eventing Association awarded her its credentials as one of eight advanced teachers in the nation. She had also served on the USEA Rules Committee for two years.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Ackerman; her parents, Ed and Sally Burge; a sister, Debbie Dillon of Lakeside, Mont.; and a brother, Curt Burge of Spokane.

The family has designated a memorial fund at Wheatland Bank to provide training for an outstanding novice rider who served eventing behind the scenes. Memorial contributions may also be made to the Deep Creek Horse Trials.

Dawn (Rasmussen) McKee

Laclede, Idaho

Memorial service for Dawn Louise (Rasmussen) McKee, 68, will be today at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Priest River, Idaho. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the cemetery in Hindsdale, Mont. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McKee, who was born in Hindsdale, died Wednesday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in the Glasgow and Fort Peck, Mont., areas and was a cheerleader.

Mrs. McKee moved to San Diego in 1955 and worked as a secretary for the superintendent of the San Diego School District until retiring in 1992.

She married George McKee in 1996, and they lived in San Diego prior to moving to Laclede in 1998.

Mrs. McKee enjoyed spending time with family, traveling and quilting.

Survivors include her husband, George; three children, David Richardson and Lois Burgess, both of Salt Lake City, and Pamela Mecham of Green River, Wyo.; five stepchildren, Mike McKee of Laclede, Patrick McKee of Sacramento, Calif., Pam Rader and Samantha Lederer, both of San Diego, and Larry McKee of Portland; four sisters, Joanne Knuteson of Great Falls, Delilah “Dee” Halteman and Ethel Partridge, both of Glasgow, and Doris Reiber of Fircrest, Wash.; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Donna Horton

Spokane Valley

Visitation for Donna June Horton, will be today from noon to 8 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Memorial service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Horton died Thursday. She was born in Spokane, where she resided until 1955, when she moved to Spokane Valley.

She graduated from North Central High School in 1934 and married William Gothmann.

Following his death, she married Leroy Horton, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Horton graduated from Kinman Business University and was employed as a bookkeeper by Armour Meats, Phillips Petroleum and Early Dawn Dairy, where she remained until her retirement.

She was active at Valley Fourth Memorial Church, where she served as librarian for a time.

She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, playing the piano and singing.

Survivors include two sons, Bill and Howard Gothmann, both of Spokane Valley; two daughters, Marlene Jewett of Kittery, Maine, and Donna Hope of Elk; a sister, Elsie DeLong of Spokane; a half-sister, Mary Salter of Osborne, Idaho; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

William Katona

Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for William “Bill” Katona, 83, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Katona, who was born in Hammond, Ind., died Thursday.

He married Irene Bodie in 1944.

Mr. Katona moved to North Idaho 15 years ago and was on the board for Coeur d’Alene Homes and the Coeur d’Alene Golf Course.

He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and theVeterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Robin Vantassell of Hayden, Idaho, Nancy Unglaub of Chicago and Bill Katona of Sunnyvale, Calif.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
