A.L. Sunday’s games

The Spokesman-Review

Red Sox 11, Tigers 9: At Detroit, Tim Wakefield (8-6) gave up six homers, matching a modern major league record last set 64 years ago, but he wound up with a win because Boston outslugged the Tigers. David Ortiz’s three-run shot capped a six-run fourth inning, and Kevin Youkilis homered twice to help the Red Sox overcome seven Detroit home runs. Wakefield is the sixth pitcher since 1900 to yield six homers in a game, but the first since George Caster of the Philadelphia Athletics against the Red Sox on Sept. 24, 1940.

Athletics 6, Twins 5 (18): At Minneapolis, Jermaine Dye hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run 18th inning, and Oakland held for a victory over Minnesota. It was the second-longest game in the history of the Metrodome.

Yankees 8, Blue Jays 2: At New York, Bernie Williams hit the 10th grand slam of his career, leading the Yankees over Toronto for their fifth straight victory. Jon Lieber (8-7) extended the Yankees’ streak of eight-inning efforts by starting pitchers to four.

Orioles 11, Rangers 5: At Baltimore, Melvin Mora went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs to back a strong start by Sidney Ponson (7-12) and the Orioles beat Texas for their season-high sixth straight victory.

White Sox 3, Indians 2: At Chicago, Ben Davis delivered his second RBI double of the game in the bottom of the ninth to give the White Sox a win over Cleveland.

Angels 6, Royals 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Jose Guillen tied it with a leadoff homer in the ninth, and reliever Dennys Reyes’ throwing error allowed the go-ahead runs to score as Anaheim beat the Royals.
