Dangers lurk in everyday life
Here are a few statistics from Laura Lee’s “100 Most Dangerous Things in Everyday Life: And What You Can Do About Them”:
•According to the U.S. consumer Product Safety Commission, roughly 10,500 people are treated for go-cart-related injuries each year; 26,700 people are treated for injuries related to shopping carts.
•Every year in the United States, 287,933 people — a number greater than the population of the Bahamas or Iceland — are injured after a run-in with a table.
•In the United States, 411,689 people a year experience injuries related to beds, mattresses and pillows, significantly higher than the number of people injured in motorcycle accidents (50,000 injuries and 2,100 deaths a year).
•At the Johns Hopkins medical institutions, researchers studied 48 mascots for professional sports teams and reported 179 job-related injuries, including heat illness, knee problems and ankle sprains. In all, the mascots suffered 2.7 injuries for every 1,000 appearances.
