Dodgers 5, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Steve Finley hit his first home run with the Dodgers and Jose Lima (11-3) pitched eight sharp innings, leading Los Angeles over the Reds. Cincinnati’s Adam Dunn, who leads the major leagues with 35 homers, hit a solo shot in the fourth that traveled an estimated 501 feet.
Padres 8, Cubs 6: At Chicago, Ramon Hernandez had three hits, including a three-run homer, and San Diego overcame Sammy Sosa’s 564th career homer to beat the Cubs. Sosa moved past Reggie Jackson for eighth place on the all-time list.
Cardinals 2, Marlins 1 (10): At Miami, Albert Pujols ended Josh Beckett’s no-hit bid with a home run in the sixth inning and Jim Edmonds homered on the first pitch from Guillermo Mota (8-5) in the 10th inning to help St. Louis top Florida.
Pirates 8, Giants 7: At Pittsburgh, Barry Bonds set a major league record by reaching 30 home runs for the 13th straight season, but Rob Mackowiak’s RBI double in the ninth gave the Pirates a win over San Francisco.
Mets 7, Astros 3: At New York, rookie David Wright singled home the go-ahead run and later hit his first Shea Stadium homer, sending the Mets past Houston.
Brewers 3, Braves 2 (10): At Atlanta, Chris Magruder homered leading off the 10th inning to send Milwaukee past the Braves.
Rockies 5, Phillies 4: At Philadelphia, pinch-hitter Vinny Castilla delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the ninth inning to lead Colorado over the Phillies.
Expos 4, Diamondbacks 0: At Montreal, Livan Hernandez and Luis Ayala combined on Montreal’s ninth shutout to lead the Expos over Arizona.
