Hobson scores goal in Canada’s 8-2 win

Spokane Chiefs forward Adam Hobson scored a goal in Canada’s 8-2 win over Sweden at the under-18 Junior World Cup hockey tournament Wednesday in Slovakia. The 17-year-old has a goal and an assist in a pair of wins for Canada.

Team Canada, 2-0, will face the hometown Slovaks today to finalize placing heading into the semifinal round. Currently, Canada leads the pool consisting of Switzerland, Slovakia and Sweden.

College basketball

The Gonzaga University men’s team has been added to the field of the 2005 EA Sports Maui Invitational, which includes Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland and Michigan State.

High schools

A mandatory state rules clinic for North Idaho high school soccer coaches and referees will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Post Falls High School at 7 p.m. A notice that appeared in Wednesday’s Sports Section listed the wrong date.

Also, on Monday a similar clinic for volleyball coaches and referees will be held at Coeur d’Alene HS. The refs will meet at 6 p.m. and coaches at 7.
