Lowdown
Josh Brown produced a fine rookie season. He was nearly automatic inside 40 yards (15 of 16) and also made a club-record 58-yarder (ninth-longest in NFL history) against Green Bay during the regular season. Of Brown’s eight misses, seven were from longer than 40 yards. Brown’s 114 points was the second-most in Seahawks history. Coaches are looking for improvement in kickoffs (just three touchbacks in 84 kickoffs) and Brown’s accuracy beyond 40 yards (50 percent last season). Undrafted free agent Tyler Fredrickson made field goals of 51 and 53 yards at Cal last year, but he faces long odds trying to beat out Brown, a seventh-round draft pick in 2003 out of Nebraska. Fredrickson was also Cal’s punter.
Fast Fact
Seattle ranked 12th out of 16 NFC teams in opponents’ average starting field position after kickoffs (29.5-yard line). Atlanta was first at 25.6; Chicago last at 31.5.
Quote
Josh Brown “has to make every single kick. Kick it between the posts, that’s always been my coaching point to him.” – Coach Mike Holmgren, flashing a smile.
