Seattle has simple plan

The Seahawks rarely, if ever, game plan specifically for preseason opponents, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a game plan.

Win, avoid injuries, execute and take a long look at younger players would just about cover Seattle’s desires for its 7 p.m. preseason tilt with Denver at Qwest Field tonight. That’s pretty much what the Seahawks accomplished in defeating Green Bay 21-3 on Monday night.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s work load should be similar to Monday. He’ll probably play a series or two before giving way to Seneca Wallace, who might want to keep his arm loose. Trent Dilfer and Brock Huard are among the many Seahawks who won’t play. Recent addition Bryson Spinner might see a few late snaps.

Players were anxious to get home to Seattle, even if it’s only for a day or so. Practice resumes at Eastern Washington University in Cheney on Monday morning.

“It’s fun to play at home and selfishly the best part about going home is seeing our families,” Hasselbeck said. “That’s probably the No. 1 thing on everyone’s minds. One of the things coach (Mike) Holmgren has been hammering into us all week is, ‘Hey, this is a business trip, I know families are there and I know there’s people you haven’t seen in a long time, but we need to focus on this game and treat it that way.’ “

Hasselbeck intends on doing just that, and hopefully squeeze in some quality time with his two young daughters. “I just want to see my girls,” he said.

Lineup changes

Heath Evans will start at fullback for starter Mack Strong, who has the night off. Jason Willis will start at split end. Koren Robinson, who missed the Green Bay game, is expected to play.

Solomon Bates will start at middle linebacker. Orlando Huff started against Green Bay. Coaches have said middle linebacker repetitions will be divided evenly.

Those who won’t play because of injury: Dilfer, Huard, cornerback Jernaro Gilford, tight end Ryan Hannam, safety Arnold Parker, cornerback Kris Richard, defensive end Grant Wistrom, linebacker D.D. Lewis, offensive lineman Jerry Wunsch, defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs and offensive tackle Chris Terry. Guard Steve Hutchinson (calf strain) will be a game-day decision.

The schedule for Wistrom’s return apparently has been pushed back. He’ll probably begin practicing following Friday’s game at San Diego. Holmgren is optimistic Wistrom, who has been slowed by plantar fasciitis, will play in the final preseason game Sept. 2 against Minnesota.

At Friday’s 35-minute walk-through, Wistrom worked on his conditioning on an adjacent field.
