“Former Washington State University athlete Ian Waltz of Post Falls failed to qualify for the Olympic finals in the men’s discus. Waltz threw the discus 193 feet, 5 inches on Saturday to finish 22nd overall in the preliminaries. The top 12 marks qualified for the finals.
“Christine Amertil of the Bahamas, a former North Idaho College athlete, ran a personal best of 50.23 seconds and finished as the second-fastest qualifier in the first round of women’s 400 meters. Amertil was in the fastest heat of the day, finishing behind Sanya Richards of the United States, who finished in 50.11. The top 24 athletes advanced to today’s semifinals. The finals will be run on Tuesday.
“Neither John Rillie or Paul Rogers scored for Australia in its 87-82 loss to Puerto Rico in a men’s basketball preliminary-round game.
“In action today are former Washington State athlete Bernard Lagat in the semifinals of the men’s 1,500 meters and former University of Idaho athlete Angela Whyte of Canada in the women’s 100-meter hurdles heats.
