Gardner wrestles for another medal
All eyes will be on the big Wyoming farm kid with some of the biggest expectations in Athens: Rulon Gardner will compete for a Greco-Roman wrestling medal, gold or bronze. Gardner, arguably the biggest star of the Sydney Games, finished his pool play 3-0 and has reached the 265-pound semifinals.
Track and field
Just three finals are on tap: the women’s 200 meters, 400 hurdles and hammer. In the 200, American Allison Felix will see if she can hang with favorite Veronica Campbell of Jamaica. In the hurdles, Sheena Johnson is the top American hope, but Russia’s Yuliya Pechenkina was a full second faster in qualifying.
Triathlon
Sheila Taormina, a former gold-medalist swimmer who says she’s retiring after Athens, is one of the favorites in the second-ever Olympic women’s triathlon.
Boxing
American medal hopeful Andre Dirrell gets a severe test from Yordani Despaigne Herrera of Cuba in the quarterfinals of the middleweight division.
Volleyball
The U.S. men will have to battle Greece and a raucous crowd in their quarterfinal match. Both teams went 3-2 in pool play. The Americans finished strong with wins over Australia and Brazil.
Basketball
The U.S. women open medal play. Given their romp through preliminary play (average margin of victory: 29 points), their quarterfinal game with Greece (2-3) should be little more than a walkover.
