Robert Savage

Priest River, Idaho

Funeral for Robert Marion “Bob” Savage, 72, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Meadowbrook Ranch, with burial on the family property. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Savage, who was born in Coolin, Idaho, died Saturday.

He attended East River School, a one-room schoolhouse, and in 1951 graduated from Priest River High School.

He worked at the Kaniksu Stock Ranch with Harold Anselmo. He later worked several years with his father at the Priest River Co-op, where the Feedmill Restaurant is now located.

Mr. Savage logged for many years with Ron MacDonald before working again with Mr. Anselmo for the Bonner County Road Department. He left the logging industry in 1978 to begin working full-time at the ranch.

In 1953 he married Juanita Dale.

He was a member of the Blue Lake Community Club and Settlement Grange.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and pinochle.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Savage of Oldtown, Idaho; two daughters, Elaine Savage and Cheri Fisher, both of Priest River; four brothers, Edwin and Otho Savage, both of Priest River, Gene Savage of Sandpoint and Vernon Savage of Pahrump, Nev.; five sisters, Juanita Saul of Camas Valley, Ore., Emma Scott of Colorado, Johanna Blomenkamp and Mary Savage, both of Priest River, and Dottie Yerkes of Sandpoint; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to North Idaho Cancer Center in Coeur d’Alene or the Blue Lake Community Center.

Carl Soholt

Moscow, Idaho

Graveside inurnment service with military honors for Carl J. Soholt, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Rock Creek Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Soholt, who was born in Elk River, Idaho, died Thursday. He was 85.

He attended school in Elk River and in Potlatch, Idaho. After his schooling he farmed in the Potlatch area with his brother, Palmer Soholt.

He joined the Army in 1942 and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was in Northern France, Normandy and in the Rhineland of Germany. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to Potlatch.

Mr. Soholt worked on the farm and later at the Potlatch mill for a short time. He later was a carpenter and worked in building construction for several years in Spokane for Barnes Construction Co.

He returned to the Potlatch area in the late 1970s and worked for several area farmers, including Herb and Ed Walser.

Mr. Soholt made his home on the family farm. Due to poor health, he recently moved into the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two aunts, Dorothy Larson of Potlatch and Pearl Williams of Moscow.

Fred Johnson

Coeur d’Alene

Service for Fred A. Johnson, 93, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will be at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in The Dalles, Ore., died Aug. 18.

He lived in Coeur d’Alene most of his life and was a farmer.

Survivors include five nephews; one niece; and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.

Esther Schaal

Endicott, Wash.

Funeral for Esther Edna Schaal will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott. Bruning Funeral Home, Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schaal died Sunday. She was 82. She was born in Lind, Wash.

She grew up on the family farm in Lind and graduated from Lind High School.

In 1940 She married David Schaal.

They made their home in Washtucna for 10 years, and then moved to what is now the family farm in Winona, Wash. After retiring from farming, they moved to Endicott in 1973.

Mrs. Schaal was active in the Dusty and Endicott congregational churches. She recently became a member of Spokane Bible Church.

She was active in the Washtucna Lions Club and with her children in 4-H groups. She was involved in community service wherever she lived.

Her husband died in 1985.

Survivors include three children, Ron Schaal of Winona, Connie Hendershott of Brier, Wash., and Cathy Schaal of Endicott; three brothers, Clarence Fode of Lind, Wash., Richard Fode of Spokane and Elmer Fode of Fredericksburg, Va.; a sister, Irene Scheeler of Lind; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Stephen White

Spokane

No service will be held for Stephen Vernon White, 91. Neptune Society handled the arrangements.

Mr. White, who was born in Colfax, died Aug. 18. A former 30-year resident of Colfax, he was a resident of Spokane for 60 years.

He graduated from Colfax High School in 1931.

He served in the Navy during World War II as a chief petty officer/carpenters mate. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. White owned Napa TV Sales and Service for 20 years, retiring in 1975. He was a bus driver for Auto Interurban Bus Co., and had owned a cabinet shop in 1946.

He married Doris Montague in 1949.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge. He was awarded Scottish Rites-32nd mason.

His hobbies included gardening, reading and writing. He had been private pilot.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Stephanie Kubej of Bellevue; a son, Gregory White of Reno, Nev.; and six grandchildren.

Mitchell Appelberg

Kellogg

Graveside inurnment for Mitchell Appelberg, 85, will be in September. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Appelberg, who was born in Kellogg, died Aug. 16. He grew up in Kellogg and graduated from high school there in 1936.

He married Meryl Derbyshire in 1941. She died in 1989.

Mr. Appelberg worked as a track and motor man and also was a security employee for the Sunshine Mine until retiring in 1984.

He enjoyed working on his pond and property , and walking his dogs.

Survivors include two children, Marylyn Williamson of Spokane and James Appelberg of Kellogg; three grandchildren, De’Anna , Tina and Toni; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Marjorie (Showalter) Olson

Spokane

Memorial service for Marjorie Louise (Showalter) Olson, 75, will be today at 4 p.m. at Sunset Chapel, Fairmount Memorial Park. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Olson, who was born in Lewiston, died Aug. 18. She was a resident of Spokane for 15 years.

She graduated from Clarkston High School in 1947. In 1955 she married Woodrow Olson.

Mrs. Olson was a day-care worker and child-care volunteer, and was active with the Foster Grandparent Program for five years.

She received the YMCA Child Care Volunteer award in 2002.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Teresa Japhet of Puyallup, Wash.; four sons, Wayne, Phillip and LeRoy Olson, all of Spokane, and William Olson of Puyallup; five sisters, Wilma Tindell of Othello, Wash., Margaret Cook of Oak Harbor, Wash., Gladys Hill of Moses Lake, and Nancy Burke and Jane Thon, both of Spokane; two brothers, Jacob Showalter of Nine Mile Falls and John Showalter of Aloha, Ore.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society.

Olga Walker

Spokane

Funeral for Olga B. Walker, 85, will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokane Stake Center, 1620 E. 29th Ave., with burial at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Walker, who was born in Roosevelt, Utah, died Thursday.

She managed Grayce’s Dress Store in Grand Coulee and retired to Spokane in 1980.

She was a member of the Sixth Ward of the Mormon Church.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Thomas Bengham and Willis Walker.

Survivors include four daughters, Jeraldine, Deana, Terri and Tana; 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Cancer Society.

Richard Gilfoil

Rathdrum, Idaho

Rosary for Richard A. Gilfoil, 71, will be today at 7 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Graveside prayers will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mr. Gilfoil, who was born in Dayton, Ohio, died Sunday.

He lived in Minnesota until moving to North Idaho in 1969.

He worked as a greens superintendent at Hayden Lake Country Club for many years.

Mr. Gilfoil was preceded in death by his wife, Mary.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Gilfoil of Port Orchard, Wash.; a sister, Lois Retter of Dayton; and 11 grandchildren.

Martha Bartalamay

Odessa, Wash.

Memorial service for Martha S. Bartalamay, 87, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa. Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bartalamay, a lifelong resident of Odessa, died Thursday.

She graduated from Odessa High School and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the church choir and the Odessa Reader’s Club.

Her husband, Emanuel, died in 1992.

Survivors include three children, Margo Sherer of Ione, Ore., Tom Bartalamay of Spokane and Beth Fry of Pendleton, Ore.; two sisters, Helen Schimke and Rose Michaelson, both of Odessa; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or the Odessa Memorial Health Care Center.

Richard Dodge

Spokane

Graveside inurnment service for Richard Junior “Dick” Dodge, 77, will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dodge, who was born in Oldtown, Idaho, died Monday.

In 1944, before graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II as a radioman until 1946.

After the war, Mr. Dodge returned to school, and in 1947 graduated from Newport High School.

He reenlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean War. In 1952 he was honorably discharged.

Mr. Dodge held various jobs, including as a counselor at boys’ ranches.

After retiring from Oldtown Hardware about 10 years ago, he moved to Spokane.

In 1983 he married Melody Spencer.

Survivors include his wife; three stepchildren, Joel and Joni Brooks, both of Spokane, and DeAnna Brooks of Hollywood, Calif.; and two brothers, Cleo Dodge of Coeur d’Alene and Gerald Dodge of Mexico.

Lucille (Bombino) Low

Newport, Wash.

Rosary and Mass for Lucille Jane (Bombino) Low, 72, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Priest River. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Low, who died Monday, was born in Spokane.

After attending schools in Priest River, she married James Low in 1949.

Mrs. Low was a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and gambling.

She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and participated in the Altar Society.

Survivors include two sons, James Low of Priest River and Rick Low of Spokane; a daughter, Lurana Koch of Priest River; a brother, Michael Bombino, and two sisters, Beatrice Graham and Eileen Appa, all of Spokane; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Catherine ‘Charlee’ Johnson

Spokane

Memorial gathering for Catherine “Charlee” Johnson, 42, will be Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mrs. Johnson, a lifelong resident of the Spokane area, died Friday. She was born in Spokane.

She attended Medical Lake High School, and from 1987 to 1991 worked at Lakeland Village on the kitchen staff. In 1991 she became a homemaker.

She enjoyed poetry, drawing, writing and fishing.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years, Michael; two daughters, Carrie Brown and Danielle Desjardins, and a son, Christopher Burton, all of Spokane; a sister, Denise Rains of Spokane; and her stepmother, Nancy Churchill of Spokane Valley.
