Looking for love in all the wrong places

 (The Spokesman-Review)

“Laws of Attraction”

•••

Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore star as divorce attorneys on opposite sides of the courtroom representing their clients while fending off the spark of romance that is obvious to everyone but … well, her at least. It ain’t Tracy and Hepburn, but that may be its greatest strength. There’s chemistry here, not to mention (sshhhh!) m-a-t-u-r-e themes (DVD, VHS; 1:27; rated PG-13 for sexual situations, profanity).

“Ella Enchanted”

••

Anne Hathaway plays Ella of Frell, a young woman burdened with the “gift” of obedience. When her mom dies and dad remarries, she finds herself at the mercy of her stepmother and stepsisters. Then she meets her prince, Char, and things go brightly – until Char’s evil uncle throws a scepter into the works. There’s not much here that’s objectionable, and Hathaway is sweetly sexy. Then again, not much is original (DVD, VHS; 1:35; rated PG for crude humor, language).

“The Girl Next Door”

••

Honor student Matthew (Emile Hirsch) is heading for Georgetown, but only if he can win the big scholarship. He gets derailed when the mysterious and super shapely Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert) moves in next door. Pretty soon he is throwing off the yoke of Good Boy to party, etc. By the time “agent” Kelly (Timothy Olyphant) enters the scene, “The Girl Next Door” has devolved into worse than unrealistic: It’s implausible. Note: The unrated version has “about a minute and a half extra nudity and sexual footage,” though none of it apparently features Cuthbert. (DVD, VHS; 1:49; rated R for strong sexual content, language, drug/alcohol use).

“10.5”

Disaster flicks are so fun to watch that it’s almost impossible to make one not worth watching with a big tub of popcorn in your lap. NBC did the near impossible with this jaw-droppingly bad miniseries, which played two nights in May. Using a crew of cast-offs (Kim Delaney), has-beens (Fred Ward), still-hopefuls (Dule Hill) and never-will-bes, “10.5” makes the volcano flick “Dante’s Peak” look like a multiple Oscar winner (DVD only; 2:45; not rated).
