Standoff ends with arrest

Associated Press

POCATELLO, Idaho – Police officers ended a five-hour standoff by setting off flash-bang devices to stun the suspect.

James William Smith, 33, was arrested Saturday afternoon for investigation of car theft, theft and burglary.

Officers took two other people into custody on similar charges earlier in the day. “Nobody was shot, everybody is going home and the suspect is in custody,” said police Capt. Gary Pritchard. “That’s the way we like it to end.”

The incident began when officers went to the home to investigate a vehicle missing from a repair shop. They found the vehicle, searched it and found other stolen merchandise.

They arrested a woman outside the residence. Another suspect attempted to escape from the home during the standoff but was captured.

Pritchard said Smith barricaded himself inside the home, which has no telephone, and made no attempt to talk to officers.
