Davis decides to step down as Browns coach

Associated Press

Butch Davis never wanted to abandon his dream job and all its ego-soothing power. The last-second losses, freaky injuries and intense scrutiny on his family changed his mind.

It was time for Davis to go. The Cleveland Browns will move on without him.

After arriving three years ago with the promise of winning a Super Bowl title, Davis resigned as Cleveland’s coach on Tuesday, leaving the last-place Browns with five games left in another sinking season.

First-year offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie will coach the Browns for the rest of the season.

Vermeil plans to return next season

There are no thoughts of another retirement for Kansas City Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil, 68, who said he’ll be back next season for the final year of his contract.

“Sometimes I walk off the field feeling sorry for myself,” Vermeil said. “That’s human nature. I’d be a liar not to say that. Everything we do that fails, I feel just as bad about today as I did in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. But I handle it better.”

Testaverde still Cowboys’ QB

Rookie Drew Henson, whose starting debut lasted only a half, is going back into watch-and-learn mode. And 41-year-old Vinny Testaverde is the starting quarterback again for the Dallas Cowboys (4-7).

Buccaneers release Gramatica

Struggling kicker Martin Gramatica was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two days after he missed three field goals in a 21-14 loss at Carolina.

The Bucs signed Arena Football League kicker Jay Taylor, who will make his NFL debut against Atlanta on Sunday.
