George Washington coach Karl Hobbs hopes the Colonials’ weekend sweep of ranked teams is a beginning rather than a two-day aberration.

T.J. Thompson scored 27 points and George Washington upset No. 12 Maryland 101-92 on Sunday in the championship game of the BB&T Classic.

“The measuring stick for this team will be at the end of the (season). … We took a step further to our goal. We took a step further to our dream,” Hobbs said after George Washington’s fifth straight victory. “That’s what we’re focusing on.”

J.R. Pinnock added 22 points and Omar Williams scored 11 of his 14 in the second half for the Colonials (5-1), who beat No. 11 Michigan State 96-83 in the semifinals.

George Washington’s only loss was the season opener at top-ranked Wake Forest in the Preseason NIT.

“Even though we lost, we took it as a learning experience,” Thompson said of the game against the Demon Deacons. “We got under control and learned to play together. When the time comes, we band together and don’t let nothing get in our way.”

John Gilchrist led Maryland (4-2) with 23 points, while Nik Caner-Medley had 16 and James Gist and Travis Garrison each added 12.

(4) Georgia Tech 87, Georgia 49: B.J. Elder scored 19 points and Jarrett Jack added 18 as the Yellow Jackets (5-0) romped to another easy victory, this time beating the Bulldogs (1-3) in Atlanta.

(11) Michigan State 66, George Mason 60: Maurice Ager scored 13 points and Alan Anderson and Paul Davis each added 12 points as the Spartans (4-2) escaped with a victory over the Patriots (3-3) in the consolation game of the BB&T Classic.

(16) North Carolina State 76, Manhattan 60: Julius Hodge bounced back from a brief benching to finish with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists as the Wolfpack (6-0) held off the Jaspers (3-2) in Raleigh, N.C.

Winsome Frazier led Mississippi State with 18 points. Campbell had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Ervin also scored points 10 for the Bulldogs.

Boston College 74, UCLA 64: Craig Smith scored 20 points as the Eagles (5-0) beat the Bruins (4-1) in the John Wooden Classic.

BC used a 13-0 run early in the second half to take the lead for good. Smith was forced to sit after picking up his fourth foul with about 8 minutes remaining. The Eagles’ lead dwindled to two points after he left, but they built it back up with nine straight points.

Chattanooga 69, Tennessee 68: Mindaugas Katelynas had 17 points and nine rebounds, Steve Cherry added 10 points and Chris Brown made a 3 at the with 1:16 left as the Mocs (3-2) stunned the Volunteers (2-3) in Knoxville, Tenn.
