He’s still a Trojans great

From wire reports The Spokesman-Review

Gary Dimkich, owner of a restaurant in Pasadena, Calif., witnessed a nice gesture by a good Samaritan at the USC-UCLA football game.

A chauffeur-driven Lincoln Town Car was entering the Rose Bowl parking lot, and a man got out to talk with the security people. Meanwhile, another car with a handicapped parking sticker tried entering the lot, but the driver was told there were no handicapped spots left and he’d have to find parking elsewhere.

Two elderly passengers in that car, saying they had trouble walking, asked the man in the Town Car if he’d give them a ride.

“Sure, hop in,” said Marcus Allen.

Cleaned up his act

Brett Favre of Green Bay, who has been in the NFL since 1991, told CBS’ Lesley Visser he had changed a great deal.

“When I first came to talk to you, you had two six packs and leftover Chinese food in your refrigerator,” Visser agreed.

Can you hear me now?

UCLA is headed back to the Las Vegas Bowl where, two years ago, the Bruins defeated New Mexico with Ed Kezirian serving as interim coach after Bob Toledo had been fired. But did Kezirian, who is UCLA’s assistant director of academic services, really coach the Bruins?

“He’s the only coach I know of who wore a headset that wasn’t plugged in,” quipped Tina Kunzer-Murphy, Las Vegas Bowl executive director.

Negotiations were juvenile

Mike Fratello left TNT to become coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, and his former TNT commentating partner, Steve Kerr, said he, too, had a recent basketball coaching offer.

“My 12-year-old son wanted me to coach his team,” Kerr said. “But he wanted me to commit to two years, and I could only offer him one. So we couldn’t come to terms.”

A bug on steroids

Jason Giambi sat out more than half the baseball season for the New York Yankees, in part because of an intestinal parasite.

“It’s believed to be the only intestinal parasite that can bench 300 pounds,” said Bret Lewis of Los Angeles radio station KFWB.

Brain-dead

Doug Krikorian was interviewing Dan Fouts on a Los Angeles radio station when he told Fouts: “As a kid growing up in the Fresno area, I used to listen to your late father announcing 49er games.”

Said Fouts: “Gee, I just talked to my father 15 minutes ago, and he seemed fine.”

Bob Fouts, 83, is alive and well in Florida.

Bad news can wait

Former UNLV football coach Harvey Hyde said there are some things that are the same for coaches at any level.

“You always read what the newspapers have to say,” he said. “Except that sometimes you run out to get it, and other times you wait until someone else goes and gets it.”

Just another team

Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy, on Notre Dame firing Tyrone Willingham:

“When you see the press conference, you realize what it’s all about. They say, ‘Hey, everything’s great, everything’s fine, but we just weren’t winning enough.’ I didn’t think I’d ever see Notre Dame in that boat, but they are, with everybody else.”
