NWC prevails in its return to Class B ranks

Last year’s Class 1A runner-up, Northwest Christian, returned to the Class B ranks, now in the Bi-County League, and spanked fellow Northeast A League refugee Liberty 55-37 in the league opener for both schools Friday.

Josh Greer led all scorers with 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field to lead the Crusaders. Josh Grewe, a transfer from Valley Christian, added 16 points.

Odessa 53, Reardan 43: The Tigers rolled into Reardan and earned a win in the league opener on the strength of David Johnson’s 11 fourth-quarter points. Johnson finished with 15 points to lead Odessa. Brad Alberts led Reardan with 16. … Valley Christian 76, Sprague-Harrington 60: Josh Pope scored 21 points and teammate Vitaliy Kozubenko added another 20 as the Panthers won in Spokane. Kevin Buddrius had 20 points for the Falcons. … Wilbur-Creston 61, Davenport 24: The Wildcats cruised to the win at Davenport behind Patrick Johnson’s 11-point effort. Johnson added seven steals and seven rebounds. His brother, Michael, added 10 points.

Dragons breathe fire in opener

St. George’s went on a 24-7 run to open the second half en route to a 51-35 win over St. Michael’s in the Panorama League opener. Davis Vaughn led St. George’s with 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Henry Butler added 11 points by hitting 3 of 4 3-point shots. … Republic 101, Northport 34: The Tigers converted 11 of 22 3-point shots in the game and opened a 30-2 lead after one quarter. Zach Gianukakis and Derek Gianukakis pumped in 20 and 19 points, respectively. Todd Orestad added 16 points, all in the second half, and Tyler Orestad added 13 assists. … Columbia 63, Inchelium 55: Dominic Kegel put up a game-high 21 points to lead the Lions at Hunters. Tyrel Sampson added 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. The game was a memorial for former Columbia point guard David Mendoza, who was killed in a Dec. 3 auto accident. … Cusick 49, Springdale 42: Cusick took the lead on the road in the second quarter, outscoring the Chargers 14-4 going into halftime. James Nenema led the Panthers with 21 points. Jeff Vanderholm had a dozen rebounds and 11 points for Springdale. … Wellpinit 66, Curlew 61: Brothers T.J. and Chazz Flett combined for 33 points to lead the Redskins at home. Sage Sonneck added 10 points and an equal number of boards for Wellpinit.

Spartans win on the road

Rosalia pulled away down the stretch to take a 41-27 win over Pullman Christian in a Whitman County League game at Pullman. Shane Koppel paced the Spartans with seven rebounds to go with nine points, with Nate Baily adding five steals and eight points.

Broncos romp in second half

Lind-Ritzville frolicked in the second half after playing St. John-Endicott to a 31-31 halftime tie. The Broncos earned a 70-61 victory at St. John in the non-league game. Cameron Stevenson’s 22 points paced Lind-Ritzville, with Jon McPherson adding another 13. Jesse Butcher paced the Eagles with 20 points. … Colville 48, Newport 33: Colville held the visiting Grizzlies to a single made free throw in the first quarter. Dan Bell and Brant Olson each scored a dozen points to lead Colville. David McFall led all scorers with 13 for Newport. … Deer Park 56, Cascade-Leavenworth 33: The Stags held a one-point halftime lead, 22-21, then cranked up the defensive pressure in the second half to secure the victory. Lance Selle pumped in 17 points, hitting 5 of 10 shots from 3-point range. Brad Harper added nine points and eight rebounds. … Bonners Ferry 56, Selkirk 47: The Badgers took control in the third period, outscoring the Rangers 20-10 in the non-league game at Bonners Ferry. Spenser Behrens’ 19 points led the Badgers, with Bryan Cossairt adding nine points and seven steals. Simon Ronniger added eight points and six rebounds.

Tekoa-Oakesdale 56, Colfax 52: The Class B Nighthawks rose up and smacked the Class 1A Bulldogs at Colfax. Derek Flock poured in 24 points to lead Tekoa-Oakesdale, with Tyler Young adding 15. Erick Wick paced Colfax with 18 points and Brian Dannher added 12 points and 10 rebounds. … Lake Roosevelt 71, Royal 49: Nick Barnaby scored 23 points and picked off six steals to lead Lake Roosevelt at home. Barnaby converted 10 of 19 shots from the floor. … Medical Lake 62, Omak 38: The Cardinals closed the deal in a hurry, outscoring Omak 26-10 in the fourth quarter to take the victory at Medical Lake. Steven Wesley tossed in 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished off eight assists to lead the Cardinals. Tanner Tareski added 17 points, five steals and five assists, and Kevin Broadnax added 14 points – eight in the fourth quarter.

Kettle Falls 65, Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls 57: The Class 1A Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 21-15 in the fourth quarter to knocked off the Class 2A Eagles at Kettle Falls. Jason Azzarito tossed in 15 points and Brandon Holibaugh added 13 points and 14 rebounds. … Freeman 77, Chewelah 55: The Scotties, still shorthanded after the football team’s march to the state championship game, opened with a 22-14 run and never looked back against the Class 2A Cougars at Freeman. Malcom Soelberg hit 4 of 5 3-point shots in the first quarter, scoring 14 of his career-high 35 points in the first period. Jason Bailey added 10 points and six assists for Freeman. … Cashmere 55, Riverside 47: Cashmere took a 30-20 edge on the boards in earning the win at Riverside. Buddy Wood had 15 points to lead the Rams.
