More Janet Jackson fallout
NBC has turned over tapes of the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics to the Federal Communications Commission after an indecency complaint, an industry source told The Associated Press.
An FCC spokesman declined comment Friday when contacted by the AP. It is not clear what part of the ceremony drew a complaint or who complained – or even if there were more than one.
The move by NBC, first reported by Mediaweek magazine, is the latest in a string of sports-related events that have drawn the FCC’s attention, from Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl to last month’s steamy opening to “Monday Night Football.”
The Athens opening ceremony was televised on Aug. 13, and included the ancient god of love, Eros, flying above two lovers dancing and playing in the water. There was also a depiction of a pregnant woman whose belly glowed.
A true heavyweight fight
Vitali Klitschko’s fight with Danny Williams Saturday was the biggest heavyweight fight – at least in the ring.
Klitschko weighed 250 pounds to 270 for Williams, breaking the record for combined weight in a heavyweight title fight of 504 1/2 set by Klitschko and Lennox Lewis in 2003.
Williams also tied the mark for heaviest title fighter, set in 1934 by Primo Carnera.
Socked it to him
Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was fined $5,000 by the NFL for wearing a pair of red socks instead of the team’s usual white in last Sunday’s 31-7 victory over the New York Giants. Portis had one of his best games in the different attire, running for 148 yards on 31 carries.
After the game, he predicted he would be fined, but he said he had to make the change because, “If you’re not looking sweet, you really can’t play too sweet.”
