Frank Howard

Private service will be held for Frank L. Howard, 88. Neptune Society handled the arrangements.
Mr. Howard, who died Tuesday, was born in Miami, Ariz. An area resident for 56 years, he had resided in Spokane Valley for the past 40 years.
He graduated from Buhl (Idaho) High School in 1933 and from the University of Idaho in 1937. He graduated from Washington State College in 1948.
Mr. Howard was a chemical engineer for Kaiser Aluminum and earned numerous patents during his 31-year career with the company. He retired in 1979.
He was a distinguished member of the American Society for Metals, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Electrochemical Society, New York Academy of Science and the Computer Society and was a fellow of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In retirement, Mr. Howard enjoyed neighborhood activities, his garden and orchard, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Kay; five sons, Walt Howard of Edmonton, Alberta, Brian Howard of Escondido, Calif., Neil Howard of San Jose, Calif., Keith Howard of Mountain View, Calif., and Bruce Howard of Portland; two brothers, Jim Howard of Denver and Dave Howard of San Diego; a sister, Ruth Kempisty of Flushing, N.Y.; and two granddaughters.
Monica Johnstone

Funeral Mass for Monica Joan Johnstone, 77, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Colbert. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Johnstone, who was born in San Antonio, Chile, died Wednesday. She was a resident of the Spokane area for 11 years.
She was an office manager for a real estate company and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Colbert.
Survivors include three sons, Peter Johnstone of Atlanta, Ian Johnstone of Spokane and Colin Johnstone of Los Gatos, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Lydia Kempf
Spokane
Viewing and visitation for Lydia (Schaible) Kempf, 86, will be Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with interment at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mrs. Kempf, who was born in Long Lake, S.D., died Sunday.
She married Bernhardt Kempf in 1939. They moved into their home on East Garland in 1952 and were there for more than 51 years.
Mrs. Kempf worked as a seamstress for more than 40 years and retired in 1970.
She was a member of the German-American Society and enjoyed traveling, fishing, quilting, cooking, dancing and sewing.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Jerry Kempf Sr. of Whitefish, Mont.; a brother, Jake Schaible of Aberdeen, S.D.; a sister, Theresa Van Vleet of Bismarck, N.D.; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
David Swanson
Spokane
Memorial service for David Ture Swanson, 68, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home.
Mr. Swanson died Tuesday.
The family moved to Rock Island, Wash., in 1944 and stayed one year. They then moved to a farm near Deer Park, where Mr. Swanson finished grade school. The family again moved to Spokane Valley, where he attended Central Valley High School.
Mr. Swanson was a truck driver and a lifelong member of Teamsters Union Local 690. He retired from West Coast Grocery.
He enjoyed bowling and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Jeannie; five children, Traci Salee, Jami Douglas, Victoria Simmons and David Swanson, all of Spokane, and Brandi Doerr of St. Petersburg, Fla. ; three brothers, Jack Swanson, Don Swanson and George Woodward; two sisters, Patty Wickham and Penny Meiers; numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
