Chadd leaves Denver hanging as Eagles cap 6-0 month
Sophomore point guard Joanna Chadd had game highs of 16 points and six assists Wednesday while leading Eastern Washington University to a 70-54 win over Denver in non-conference women’s basketball at Reese Court.
Chadd finished 5 of 7 from the floor and hit all three of her 3-point attempts.
EWU (7-3), which finished the month 6-0, took charge with second-half runs of 13-0 and 9-0. Felice Moore of the Eagles added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Tasha Jones of the Pioneers (2-8) scored 15 points but was 0 for 7 on 3-point attempts.
Arizona 54, Washington State 51: Dee-Dee Wheeler finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and four steals as the Wildcats (10-2, 2-0) held off the Cougars (4-7, 0-2) in Pacific-10 Conference play at Friel Court.
Arizona, missing starting center Shawntinice Polk (knee injury), dashed to a 14-0 lead. WSU scrambled to within one point with 6:48 left, but Natalie Jones’ steal and layup with 1:48 to go put the Wildcats ahead by six points.
Ariana Scales had 11 points and six rebounds for the Cougars, and forward Kate Benz added a game-high 10 rebounds.
Washington 63, (21) Arizona State 55: Kayla Burt, Kristen O’Neill and Jill Bell combined for 33 points as the Huskies (5-7, 1-1 Pac-10) upset the Sun Devils (9-3, 1-1) at Seattle.
The Huskies, who haven’t lost to ASU at home since 1996, took control with a 12-3 run midway through the second half. Emily Westerberg (Central Valley High) had nine points and seven rebounds for ASU.
Casper (Wyo.) College 61, CC Spokane 42: Kylee Rinehart, LaTasha Watt and Marta Tlalka combined for 27 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Thunderbirds past the Sasquatch (6-8) in a second-round game of the Dixie State (Utah) Invitational in Las Vegas.
The Thunderbirds shot 50 percent from the field and held CCS to 31-percent shooting.
Reserve Kristen Hilgert shot 5 of 8 from the floor and led the Sasquatch with 10 points. CCS starters shot 5 of 23 from the field.
The Sasquatch will play for seventh place today against the loser between Salt Lake CC and Brookdale (N.J.) CC. Casper will play for fourth place.
Idaho 63, Utah State 62: Leilani Mitchell’s layup with 49 seconds left gave the Vandals (6-4, 1-0) a win over the Utes (4-5, 0-1) in a Big West Conference opener at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.
Idaho missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities during the closing stages, but Utah State (4-5, 0-1) committed turnovers on its final three possessions.
Idaho (6-4, 1-0) opened the second half with a 9-2 run for a 43-36 lead, but the Aggies responded with a 19-5 run to lead by seven points with 10 minutes left.
Men’s basketball
CC Spokane 79, Lane (Ore.) CC 66: At Spokane Community College, Erik Bell totaled 21 points and seven rebounds while leading the Sasquatch (10-5) past the Titans (7-7) during the second day of the Spokane Christmas Classic.
Bell, Justin Bright and Jeremy Mangum shot a combined 13 of 13 from the line to lead CCS’ 18-for-20 night. Mangum added 12 assists and seven rebounds.
Joel Wright and Aaron Collins combined for six 3-pointers and scored 14 apiece for the Titans.
In the night’s other game, Robert Comer hit 14 of 19 from 3-point range and scored 44 points to power Walla Walla CC to a 94-68 win over Portland CC.
