Monday’s games
Brewers 1, Cubs 0: At Milwaukee, Ben Sheets (8-5) struck out 12 in seven innings and Craig Counsell hit a rare homer that led the Brewers over Chicago. The Brewers, who struck out 17 in all, stopped a season-high four-game losing streak and also ended the Cubs’ four-game winning streak. Milwaukee hadn’t beaten the Cubs at home since Aug. 28, 2002, a span of eight games. They were 0-7 against the Cubs at Miller Park last season.
Cardinals 4, Reds 1: At St. Louis, Edgar Renteria and Scott Rolen drove in two runs each, and Albert Pujols had three hits to lead the Cardinals over Cincinnati. Chris Carpenter (9-3) struck out eight and walked none in seven-plus inning. He allowed one run and five hits.
Phillies 6, Mets 5: At Philadelphia, Pat Burrell had two hits and two RBIs, helping the Phillies beat Tom Glavine (7-6) and New York. Mets outfielder Richard Hidalgo set a team record by homering in his fifth consecutive game. Mets reliever John Franco pitched in his 1,071st game, tying Dennis Eckersley for second place on the career list behind Jesse Orosco (1,252).
Rockies 7, Giants 4: At San Francisco, Jeromy Burnitz hit a two-run double and Colorado stretched a winning streak to four for the first time this season, beating the Giants. San Francisco has lost six of its last nine games. Still, the Giants have beaten the Rockies in 14 of the last 17 meetings between the division rivals, including a three-game sweep at home May 28-30.
Pirates 3, Marlins 1: At Miami, Josh Beckett was pulled after four innings in his first game back from the disabled list, and Pittsburgh’s Kip Wells (4-5) pitched eight shutout innings to beat Florida for the Pirates’ 10th straight win. Beckett (4-5), who hadn’t started since June 17 because of a lower back strain, was making just his second start since May 30, a day before he went on the disabled list because of a blister on his right middle finger. He left after the fourth inning with blister problems again.
Braves 11, Expos 4: At San Juan, Puerto Rico, Andruw Jones hit a three-run homer in a six-run first inning and Chipper Jones had four RBIs, leading Atlanta over Montreal. Atlanta sent 16 batters to the plate in the first two innings and built an 8-0 lead. Zach Day (5-9) was chased after 47 pitches, allowing eight runs and eight hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Padres 2, Astros 1: At San Diego, Ryan Klesko singled in the go-ahead run with one out in the eighth inning and Brian Lawrence (10-5) outlasted Roger Clemens to lead the Padres to a win over Houston. Klesko singled to right off Dan Miceli (3-4) to bring in Sean Burroughs from second to break a 1-1 tie. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 23 chances.
