Morgan jumps out front
Gil Morgan led after the opening round at the Senior Players Championship for the second straight year.
He hopes to stay on top this time.
Morgan shot a 7-under 65 Thursday in Dearborn, Mich., one shot short of his own first-round record. His three-stroke lead over six players is the largest opening-round advantage in the 22-year history of the tournament, one of the Champions Tour’s five majors.
Morgan started last year with a 64 but went on to finish tied for fifth. He followed his strong start with rounds of 73-72-69.
Dana Quigley, the “Iron Man” of the Champions Tour, was in the group at 4 under. The tournament is the 250th consecutive event Quigley has been eligible for and played in since 1997, and his 235th in a row overall.
Mallon continues hot streak
Less than a week after winning the U.S. Women’s Open, Meg Mallon had a 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead in the first round of the Canadian Women’s Open.
Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot a 72, and Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, a 73.
Coceres has early lead
Jose Coceres birdied eight of his first 11 holes and shot a 9-under 62 to take a one-stroke lead in the opening round of the John Deere Classic PGA Tour event in Silvis, Ill.
Vaughn Taylor eagled the par-5 17th to briefly take a share of the lead but three-putted the final hole for a bogey and finished with a 63.
Mickelson struggles at Scottish Open
Jose Manuel Lara shot a 6-under 65 and was tied for the first-round lead with Phillip Price and 50-year-old Eduardo Romero at the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond in Luss, Scotland.
Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who shot a 1-over 72, has one eye on the British Open, the one major where he has never finished in the top 10.
