Grocery Outlet winning streak at 20

In a showdown of Spokane Valley Baseball League Giants leaders, Grocery Outlet from North Pines ran its two-year winning streak to 20 games.

The defending division champions are 7-0 this year following a 7-4 win over Blasingame Insurance. Grocery Outlet leads Blasingame, from Centennial, and Mountain View, winners of six straight games, by two games with five remaining.

Focus Group, from Bowdish, moved into fourth place with a pair of wins, including a comeback victory over Horizon II after trailing 8-1 entering the third inning.

Colin Joy pitched four relief innings, allowing but two unearned runs and helped further spark the comeback by going 3-for-3. He scored three runs and drove in three.

Brandon Johnson and Adam Eastburg, sharing the No. 4 slot in the batting order, were a combined 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Johnson for the week was 3-for-5 and drove in five runs.

Horizon II had earlier won three straight games, Zach Shulkin 8-for-9 in two of the wins with two doubles and five RBIs. He had two hits, including a three-run triple against Focus Group. Ryan Hadley was 6-for-8, doubled twice and drove in six runs.

In the Midget League, Spokane County Sheriff’s improved to 8-1 in the American Division with a trio of July wins. Included was a first-place showdown 9-2 victory over White Elephant.

Joey Lawrence struck out 13 in two of the wins. Jesse Perry went 4-for-6 with two doubles and a triple. He drove in five runs against White Elephant. Brendon Bowman, Alec Baker and Eric Wageman were other contributors in the wins.

In another Midget game, Wi-Fi Broadband’s Taylor Keeton had three hits and scored three runs in a win over Banner Fuel. Pitchers Nick Clark and Garrett Galloway combined for the win.

Back in action after the July 4 break, Pee Wee teams played once this past week.

Gibson’s Nusery upset Dr. DeCounter 5-2 to hand the American leader its first loss in eight games. It thrust Merit Electric and Pizza Hut back into the title picture.

Pizza Hut beat Sterling Self Storage 7-1 and Matthew Stewart struck out eight in the extra inning game. He doubled in the second and hit a home run in the decisive 6-run seventh inning.

Dustin Dach had two home runs and four RBIs making him 21-for-24 with 21 runs driven in this season. He also struck out six during three scoreless innings.

Conley’s in the National Division improved to 8-0 with a 9-6 win over Econo Landscaping. The Opportunity team has a two-game lead with four to go.

In other games, River City Pizza players Nick Buechler and Caleb Burger turned a double play, but Spokane Indians rallied for a 19-18 win.

Complete Suite Furniture’s Mark Seely had three hits, scored three times and drove in two during an 11-1 win over Autocraft. Seely also pitched three shutout innings.

Teammates Andres Morales also had three hits and Alex Yoseph added two hits, including a home run.

Tom’s Barber Shop scored three runs in the sixth inning to force a tie and five more in the extra-inning seventh for a 10-6 win over Custom Touch Concrete.

Derrick Rabideaux had a bases loaded double in the sixth and Nash Archer a bases-loaded double in the seventh to fuel the comeback.

Partners in the dark

MeadowWood Women’s 18-Hole Club golfers were in the dark about who their partner would be during a “Blind Partners” game.

As it turned out when Carol Schultz and Caroline Arnot were teamed up, they turned in an easy net with with a combined score of 145.

They won by nine strokes over their nearest competition.

Trailhead golfers in action

Weekly medal play among Trailhead Ladies Golf Club members produced some close scores.

Deanna Hauser in A flight shot low gross 49, but Harriet Carbon wasn’t far off with a 51 in B flight and Bambi McDowell shot 53 for the no-handicap flight win. Pat Woollett shot 56 in C flight.

Net winners were Carolyn State with 33 in A flight, Nel Oehrling with 29 in B and Caroline Michielli with 22 in C.

Strauss leads way

It was Karen Strauss again atop weekly Liberty Lake Women’s 9-Hole golf.

She shot a first-flight low gross score of 47, barely over Lorraine Martin‘s net winning 45.

Second flight went to Sadie Rueckert with a 57 and Polly Soderquist netted 36.

Third flight winner was Sue Matsui with 68 while Sybill Sturgill netted 34. And Alice Sturman had a chip-in on the ninth hole.
