film

“Batman Forever”

The free outdoor movie begins at dusk. Val Kilmer is the caped crusader. Rated PG. Today. Pavillion Park, Liberty Lake. 742-8694.

“Cheaper by the Dozen”

Remakes are a sign either that there was something worthwhile about the original film or that the filmmakers are creatively bankrupt. The former is true here. This remake of Walter Lang’s 1950 film of the same name updates everything but the sexual politics, which are left lurking in the post-war decade. Steve Martin plays dad, a football coach who uproots his football-team-sized family to take the position at his old alma mater. Uh oh. This interferes with the lives of his children, and it interferes with the literary efforts of his wife (Bonnie Hunt). Dad’s surprised by all this, but then why shouldn’t he be? He can’t even remember his kids’ names. Rated PG-13. Today–Sunday at 7 p.m., with matinee Sunday at 4:15 p.m. Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre, Moscow. $5/adults, $2/age 12 and younger. (208) 882-4127.

“Goonies”

Midnight movie. Rated PG. Today and Saturday. Garland Theater, 924 W. Garland. $2.50. 458-0792.

Movies in the Park

Free to the public. Saturday. 7 p.m., Greenbluff Community Church, 9108 E. Greenbluff Road.

“Army of Darkness”

Midnight movie. When last seen, Ash (Bruce Campbell as the protagonist of the grossly hilarious “Evid Dead 2”) was hurling through a netherworld into the distant past. He awakens to a medieval world with all his 20th century arrogance intact. Campbell lends this tame effort at satire the humor that it boasts – “Give me some sugar, baby,” he says just before kissing one nubile maiden – and is, in fact, the embodiment of an adolescent boy’s fantasies of stepping from his ordinary world and becoming a super-hero in the next. Overall, though, director Sam Raimi can’t match Campbell’s bravura. Rated R. July 23 - 24. Garland Theater, 924 W. Garland. $2.50. 458-0792.

“The Little Mermaid”

The free film begins at dusk. Rated G. July 23. Pavillion Park, Liberty Lake. 742-8694.
