Thursday’s games
Cardinals 7, Reds 2: Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen each hit two-run homers to lead St. Louis to a victory at Cincinnati. Matt Morris (10-6) settled down after giving up hits to the first two batters, and worked out of a jam in the sixth for his second consecutive win against Cincinnati.
Cubs 4, Brewers 1: Derrek Lee homered in the second and had an RBI double in a three-run sixth as Chicago rallied to win at Milwaukee.
Braves 8, Expos 0: Marcus Giles hit two doubles in his first game in two months and Jaret Wright won his fifth straight decision, leading host Atlanta over Montreal. Giles went 2 for 5 to lead the Braves to their 13th win in 16 games. The Braves tied Philadelphia for first place in the East Division. Wright (7-5) hasn’t lost since May 22, when the Dodgers beat him 7-4. He gave up three hits in seven innings and allowed only one runner to reach third.
Mets 3, Phillies 2 (11): Roberto Hernandez couldn’t handle Ty Wigginton’s bases-loaded comebacker in the 11th inning, allowing the winning run to score in host New York’s victory over Philadelphia. Jose Parra (1-0) struck out two in a hitless 11th for his first major league win since Aug. 20, 1996, with Minnesota against Milwaukee.
Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 3: Shawn Green hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, powering Los Angeles over Arizona at Phoenix. Once again, the Diamondbacks’ bullpen wasted a superlative effort by Randy Johnson, giving up all four runs after The Big Unit was taken out of the game. Johnson struck out nine in seven innings and had an RBI single. Manager Al Pedrique pulled Johnson after 108 pitches, 75 strikes.
Giants 7, Rockies 5: Shawn Chacon hit J.T. Snow with a pitch with the bases loaded for the go-ahead run in San Francisco’s four-run ninth inning, helping the Giants beat Colorado at Denver. It was Chacon’s seventh blown save in 27 chances.
