Center collecting supplies for students

The Spokane Valley Community Center is collecting school supplies for low-income students.

Mollie Dalpae, center director, said when students arrive without the required supplies, they face embarrassment and sometimes fall behind.

The community can help by donating felt-tip markers, scissors, backpacks, binders, protractors, calculators and other supplies, and dropping them off at Spokane Valley Community Center, 10814 E. Broadway Ave. Last year, the program helped 1,373 kids.

Parents and guardians can register children to receive school supplies through Aug. 20.

To participate, parents need to present identification, proof of household income and a piece of official mail proving address. Also, Social Security cards are needed for each family member to prove custody.

Supplies will be distributed Aug. 25.

Spokane Valley Community Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 927-1153.
