Dorothy (Hedrick) Habberstad
Colville
Funeral for Dorothy Margaret (Hedrick) Habberstad, 86, will be today at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Colville, with graveside service and vault interment at Mountain View Park Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Chapel, Colville, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Habberstad, a lifelong resident of Colville, died Wednesday. She was born in her parent’s homestead cabin near Clugston Creek in Colville.
She attended the Echo School and graduated from Colville High School in 1934. After finishing Kinman Business College, she worked for the Department of Health and Child Welfare.
In 1934 she married John Habberstad, and the couple made their home in the Colville Valley.
In 1960 Mrs. Habberstad went back to work when her youngest child started first grade, and she began a career at Aster School as the school secretary.
She retired in 1980.
She enjoyed gardening.
She was active in St. Paul Lutheran Church, and her home was an election polling place for the Aladdin Valley for 20 years.
She was a member of Aladdin Women’s Club, the Colville Valley Grange, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Colville Library.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include two sons, John Habberstad of Spokane and Jim Habberstad of The Dalles, Ore.; a daughter, Beth Schafer of Connell, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Robert Hanses
Millwood
Funeral Mass for Robert James Hanses, 85, will be today at 10 a.m. at St. Paschal Roman Catholic Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hanses, who was born in Tampico, Wash., died Thursday. He was a resident of Spokane for 51 years.
He graduated from Marquette High School in Yakima in 1937.
He entered the Navy, serving during World War II for four years as a chief petty officer aboard the USS Harris.
He lived in Wiley City, Wash., until settling in Spokane in 1953, where he farmed at Mount St. Michaels for the Jesuits.
Mr. Hanses has been a member of St. Paschal Parish for 27 years.
He enjoyed gardening and playing pinochle, cribbage and Acey-Ducey.
Survivors include a son, Joe Hanses of Lebanon, Ore.; seven daughters, Sue Johnson of Otis Orchards, Diana Price of Spokane, Cheryl Pierce of Snohomish, Wash., Mary Ann Haney of Mercer Island, Wash.; Betty Ells of Wenatchee, and Roberta Meier and Barb Link, both of Sweet Home, Ore.; a brother, Richard Hanses of Walla Walla; a sister, Mary Sandall of Moxee City, Wash.; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Clifford Stafford
Otis Orchards
Service for Clifford Eugene Stafford, 82, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Stafford, who was born in Otis Orchards, died Friday.
He was raised and schooled in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and married Doris Warren in 1946.
He was a World War II veteran, having served with the Army’s 88th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy from December 1942 until February 1946.
He retired in 1984 after 37 years at Inland Empire Paper Co. in Millwood.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Doris; a son, Kenneth Stafford; a daughter, Beverly Walker; a sister, Joan Rickaby; and four grandchildren.
George McCollough
Deer Park
Memorial service for George H. McCollough, 69, will be today at 1 p.m. at Open Door Congregational Church in Deer Park. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McCollough, a longtime resident of Deer Park, died Thursday.
He moved to Deer Park in 1955. Within a week of arriving, he began working at Kaiser Mead in Spokane and retired in 1997.
From the early 1960s until 1974 he served with Deer Park Fire Department and Ambulance, including as fire chief. Mr. McCollough also was a volunteer with the local police department.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and bowling. He was a coach for Little League and Junior Bowling. He was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Dixie; five children, Roxanne Orton and Tony, Greg, Tim and Jeff; three sisters, Emma Jean Rushing of Oklahoma City, and Shirley Grimm and Francis Regnier of Concordia, Kan.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Madge Anderson
Sagle, Idaho
Service for Madge Marie Anderson, 75, was Friday at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint
Mrs. Anderson, who was born in California, died July 14.
She graduated from high school in Lowell, Ore., and lived in Eugene, Ore., for many years.
Mrs. Anderson was a restaurant cook in Eugene until retiring in 1997. Due to health reasons, she recently moved to Sagle to live with her daughter, Sally.
Mrs. Anderson enjoyed water recreation, gardening, working with flowers, and collecting dolls and miniature lighthouse figurines.
Her husband died earlier.
Survivors include eight children, Tammie of Spokane, Sally of Sagle, and Zella, Debbie, Janie, Robin, Sandy and William, all of Oregon; two sisters and a brother, all of Oregon; 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Roger Phifer
Spokane
Visitation for Roger Ross Phifer, 57, will be Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Matthew Institutional Baptist Church, with funeral at 5 p.m. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is handling arrangements.
Mr. Phifer, a 27-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.
He was born in Seattle, where he attended Foster High School. He attended Kinman Business University in Spokane. He was a telemarketing researcher.
He was a member of St. Matthew’s Church, and his hobbies included model cars and Bible reading.
Survivors include three daughters, Carrie Harris of Kent, Wash., and Sarah Phifer and Becky Phifer, both of Spokane; a son, Ben Phifer of Spokane; a sister, Shirley Tongue of Maple Valley, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
Clinton Rettkowski
Spokane
Memorial service for Clinton Edwin Rettkowski, 81, will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2824 N. Lee St. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rettkowski, who was born in Ritzville, Wash., died Tuesday. He was a 75-year resident of Spokane.
He grew up in Fairfield, where he graduated from Fairfield High School in 1942 and farmed for several years.
He sold insurance and real estate in Coeur dAlene for 30 years until retiring in 1985. He enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Caroline.
Survivors include a son, David Rettkowski of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Rosemary Barber of Spokane; a sister, Geneva Clausen of Waverly, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Edwin Mueller Sr.
St. Maries
Service for Edwin Alfred Mueller Sr., 92, will be today at 2 p.m. at the Community United Presbyterian Church in St. Maries, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Mueller, who was born in St. Maries, died Friday.
He grew up in St. Maries and attended Omega Grade School and then worked in the woods.
Mr. Mueller married Helen McWilliam in 1939, and the couple lived in St. Maries.
He and his brothers operated Mueller Brothers Logging, and he worked for the company for 27 years.
He began working for Milwaukee Land Co. as a land manager in 1961 and retired in 1976.
Mr. Mueller was a member of the Omega Gospel Church and enjoyed church activities, gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years; two children, Edwin Mueller Jr. of Las Vegas and Alverna Thomas of Moscow, Idaho; two brothers, Walter and Clarence Mueller, both of St. Maries; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Maxine (Norton) Crone
Spokane
Funeral for Maxine Renee (Norton) Crone, 87, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Crone, who was born in Jerry, Wash., died Friday.
She attended grade school in Nespelem, Wash., and graduated from Cheney High School.
She married Arthur Crone in 1935. They lived in the Grand Coulee area for five years. In 1940 they moved to Spokane, and she had lived in the Spokane area since that time.
Mrs. Crone worked for the Postal Service for 21 years, retiring in 1986.
She loved to bowl and golf and traveled extensively.
Her husband died in 1959.
Survivors include a son, Lonnie Crone of Spokane; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

David Freund
Spokane
Graveside service for David Freund, 61, was Monday at Pines Cemetery.
Mr. Freund, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.
He grew up in Spokane Valley and in 1967 graduated from West Valley High School.
He trained as an inhalation therapist and worked at Boeing Co. as a mechanic and leadman for four years.
Mr. Freund returned to Spokane and attained an associate’s degree from Spokane Community College as a heavy-equipment mechanic and worked in that field until he was disabled.
He rejoined the Navy Reserve as an independent corpsman with the Navy Seabees for 12 years.
He played piano, sang and directed church choir.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; four children, Alice Lewis, Richard and Kenneth Freund, and Christian Davey; and eight grandchildren.
Jack Bullis
Spokane
Memorial service for Jack T. Bullis, 69, will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, with a celebration of life at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bullis, who died Friday, was born in North Wilkesboro, N.C.
He joined the Air Force in 1954 and served in the Vietnam War.
He retired after 20 years in the military and worked the next 18 years for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Spokane.
He later drove tour buses and school buses.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Jeanette; two children, Darron Thompson of Spokane and Jeanelle Yancey of Portland; three brothers, Bob, Bill and Michael Bullis; three sisters, Dorothy Walters, Gay Parks and Barbara Williams; and three grandchildren.
Joseph ‘Casey’ Harper
Greensboro, N.C.
Memorial Mass for Joseph L. “Casey” Harper, 86, will be today at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Greensboro, N.C. Hanes Lineberry Funeral Homes in Greensboro is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Harper, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.
A 42-year resident of Spokane, he moved to Greensboro a year ago.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He was employed as an estimator/ engineer with county government in Spokane until his retirement.
He was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Roman Catholic Church in Spokane. He also was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Names Society.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bernice; four children, Marty Harper of Phoenix, Pamela Pegnam of Tucson, Ariz., Gregory Harper of Crofton, Md., and Carolynn Rice of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Norma (Woller) Friesen
Spokane
Potluck gathering in memory of Norma Fay (Woller) Friesen, 84, was Friday.
Mrs. Friesen, who was born in Sundance, Wyo., died last Tuesday.
She moved to Spokane Valley in 1936 and graduated from Central Valley High School in 1938.
She married John Friesen in 1939.
Mrs. Friesen worked as a cocktail waitress, seamstress, cook for the blind and at the Spokane Child Development Center.
She was a member of the Hillview Club in Trentwood, taught Sunday school for Zion Lutheran and Millwood Presbyterian churches, and sang in choirs.
She also was a Scout leader and Camp Fire leader and enjoyed playing cards and board games.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include two children, Allan Friesen of Coeur d’Alene and Kyra Straub of Spokane; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Clyde ‘Hoss’ Harris
Hayden, Idaho
Memorial celebration for Clyde “Hoss” Harris, 71, was July 12 at the family home in Hayden. Graveside service was in Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.
Mr. Harris, who was bon in Tennessee, died July 8.
He grew up in Tennessee and in 1953 married Colleen Hatfield .
Mr. Harris served with the Army during the Korean War.
He moved to San Fernando Valley, Calif., in 1959 and worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry until his retirement in 1994.
In 1996 he moved to North Idaho.
Mr. Harris enjoyed fishing for catfish, woodworking, leatherworking and restoring classic cars.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen; five children, Vickie Ybarra and Sharon Hart, both of Hayden, Ron Harris of South Carolina, Vincent Harris of Tennessee and Tammy Tuten of Spirit Lake, Idaho; two brothers, Claude and Andy Harris; two sisters, Margaret Brown and Ruby Grant; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
