Note to readers
A letter to the editor by A.P. Jones of Winchester, Idaho, published July 14, was essentially a quotation from John Stuart Mill.
The letter writer said he did not attribute the quotation, which had been passed along to him, because he understood that the author was unknown. The passage (beginning, “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things.”) comes from a magazine article the British philosopher wrote about the U.S. Civil War.
The Spokesman-Review accepts letters for publication with the understanding they are the original work of those who sign them.
