Sandpoint showcases local artwork
The second summer Sandpoint ArtWalk kicks off Friday with 21 gallery spaces showcasing more than three dozen leading Inland Northwest artists and crafters. One of those artists is Ann Porter of Sandpoint. Known for her sculpture and installations, Porter is highlighting stained glass work in her show at the Chris Kraisler Gallery.
“Twins” is a show about “symbols that remind us of our attachments and the things we consider sacred,” says gallery owner Kraisler.
“Ann is very inventive in her images,” says Kraisler. “She doesn’t hold back and isn’t afraid to surprise or shock people. In addition, her work is extraordinarily well-crafted.”
Famed oil rub-out artist Louis Maestas of Ruidoso, N.M., is back at Artistic Impressions Gallery. Maestas’ technique involves applying blocks of paint onto a canvas, then removing it with a thumb and cotton rag to create the image.
There is “virtually no brush work in Louis’ paintings,” says gallery owner Karen Smith. “It’s like watching a negative develop.”
Speaking of negatives, the Hallans Gallery, which houses the Ross Hall photography collection, is having its grand opening Friday at 323 N. First Ave. It also shows work by Dann Hall, Hazel Hall and Dick Himes.
Live bands at five ArtWalk locations “will keep you dancing down the street,” said Lizzy Hughes, POAC executive director, in an e-mail. Listen to tunes at Arlo’s Restaurant, Sand Creek Grill, Pend d’Oreille Winery, Misty Mountain Furniture and Park Place Stage.
Self-guided tour brochures are available at area kiosks, Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, participating locations and the Pend Oreille Arts Council office at the Old Power House, 120 Lake St.
The original artwork for the cover of the ArtWalk brochure was created by Rory McCambly of Sandpoint. “Rory’s bright colors, amusing designs and stylized images make people smile,” said Hughes.
McCambly’s work is in the Main Stage Café.
