film

“Army of Darkness”

Midnight movie. (Reviewed by Dan Webster) When last seen, Ash (Bruce Campbell as the protagonist of the grossly hilarious “Evil Dead 2”) was hurling through a netherworld into the distant past. He awakens to a medieval world with all his 20th century arrogance intact. Campbell lends this tame effort at satire the humor that it boasts – “Give me some sugar, baby,” he says just before kissing one nubile maiden – and is, in fact, the embodiment of an adolescent boy’s fantasies of stepping from his ordinary world and becoming a super-hero in the next. Overall, though, director Sam Raimi can’t match Campbell’s bravura. Rated R. Runs through Saturday. Garland Theater, 924 W. Garland. $2.50. 458-0792.
