Katherine Hickox

San Marcos, Calif.

Viewing for Katherine Power Akerly Hickox, 91, will be today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, followed by a memorial service at Heritage Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m.

Mrs. Hickox, a former longtime resident of Spokane, died July 15 in San Marcos, Calif. She was born in Kaslo, British Columbia

She attended Holmes Grade School and graduated from North Central High School in 1931.

She began working at the Liberty Theater at age 16 and was employed there all through high school.

She married Ellsworth Akerly in 1933.

Mrs. Hickox began teaching Hawaiian dances at the YMCA in 1956 and continued for 10 years. During that time her hula troupe danced at many parties and club functions.

Her husband died in 1962.

Mrs. Hickox left Spokane in 1967 to live in Hawaii for 30 years.

She met Averitt Hickox on a tour, and they were married in Hawaii in 1970. He died in 1994.

Mrs. Hickox moved back to Spokane in 1996 and lived at the Cooper George Apartments. For health reasons, she moved to California in 2001 to live with a daughter.

Mrs. Hickox was a member of the Amistad Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Kay Harkins of San Marcos, Calif., and Marilee Wright of Canadien, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles Smith

Plummer, Idaho

A celebration of the life of Charles Lee Smith, 76, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Plummer Bible Church, 1090 D. St. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Quincy, Mich., died Monday.

He grew up in Plummer and graduated from high school there in1947 and was drafted into the Army in 1950.

He served with the 45th Infantry division in Korea and received the Purple Heart.

Mr. Smith returned to Plummer in 1952 and married Carol Atkinson that year.

He worked in the woods most of his life and was employed in all phases of the logging process and also was a cattle rancher.

Mr. Smith owned the Parkside Stihl saw shop in Plummer from 1968 to 1975, and the couple also operated the Own Chalet Bed and Breakfast near Plummer for several years until illness forced his retirement two years ago.

He enjoyed hunting, traveling, snowmobiling and motorcycle riding.

Mr. Smith was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Plummer Range, St. Maries Small Logging Council and the American Tree Farm Association.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; two sons, Stan Smith and Duane Smith, both of Plummer; a sister, Shirley Neuls of Burton, British Columbia; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Eileen Lannen Pena

Kellogg

Service for Eileen Rose (Zuehlsdorff) Lannen Pena, 88, will be today at 1 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pinehurst, Idaho. Burial will be at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pena, who was born in Isabel, S.D., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Mobridge, S.D., and then graduated from beauty school.

She married Edward “Mike Lannen in 1935 and moved to Pine Creek near Pinehurst in 1937. The couple later divorced.

She married Casey Pena in 1971, and he died in the Sunshine Mine Fire in 1972.

Mrs. Pena owned Cuts and Curls Beauty Salon in Pinehurst.

She was previously involved with the Parent-

Teacher Association and was active with local bowling leagues and several choral groups.

Mrs. Pena was a member of the Pythian Sisters and the American Lutheran Church of Kellogg and was a founding member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed poetry and politics.

Survivors include three children, Bernard Lannen of Cataldo, Idaho, Susie Boone, of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Michalene Hauser of Pacifica, Calif.; a sister, Helen Hamilton of Medford, Ore.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Aileen Fricke

Rockford

Visitation for Aileen Marie Fricke, 87, will be today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. .at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mrs. Fricke died Monday.

She lived in Rockford all her life, graduating from Rockford High School. She married Lawrence Fricke in 1938.

Mrs. Fricke was active in her community, belonging to the Rockford Garden Club, Mica Peak Club and Birthday Club. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockford.

She enjoyed ceramics, cooking and gardening.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Gary Fricke; two daughters, Patricia Meyers and Janice Stolz; three brothers, Clement, Melvin and Neal La Shaw; a sister, Bernice Wigen; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren

Memorial contributions may be made to St Joseph Catholic Church or Fairview Cemetery.

Henry ‘Allen’ Schneider

Spokane

Memorial service for Henry A. “Allen” Schneider, 81, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fourth Memorial Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schneider, who was born in Oregon, died Sunday.

He married Gloria Green in 1970.

He was an electronic and mechanical engineer with a degree in applied science from Spokane Community College.

He was employed at Washington State University until 1971. He formed his own business, which he ran until 1990. He retired to care for his wife, who had cancer.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Sharon of Seattle, Barbara of Tacoma and Mike of Mexico; adopted and stepchildren David, Donny, Cindy, Dan, Jim and Carl; his former wife, Evelyn Engle; a brother, Don; one granddaughter and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Medical Center Heart Institute.

Miguel Booker

Davenport, Wash.

Funeral for Miguel A. “Mike” Booker, 79, will be today at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Booker, who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Dayton High School and the University of Idaho.

He served in the military during World War II.

Mr. Booker coached at Metaline Falls and LaCrosse, Wash.

He farmed in Davenport until his retirement, and was involved in many community projects over the years.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lions Club and was past Lincoln County Fair board president.

He enjoyed riding horses, hunting, snowmobiling and driving around the country.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Thelma; a daughter, Patty Corral of Mead; a son Mike Booker Jr. of Davenport; and three grandchildren.

Dorothy Grigsby

Spokane

Memorial service for Dorothy M. (Carroll) Grigsby, 66, will be next Friday at 11 a.m. at Unity Church. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Grigsby, who was born in Colfax, died Saturday. She was a longtime resident of Spokane.

She graduated from Colfax High School in 1956 and worked in accounting and payroll for more than 30 years.

She enjoyed reading, swimming and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Grigsby.

Survivors include three daughters, Ellen Hopkins, Janet Schadewitz and Sandi Okert, all of Spokane; three sons, Ted Raamot of Edmonds, Wash., David Grigsby of Spokane and Aaron Grigsby of Wyoming; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or Hospice House Fund.

Frances Clark

Spokane

Graveside service for Frances Jane Clark, 87, will be today at 3 p.m. at Naches (Wash.) Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clark, who was born in Mora, Minn., died Wednesday.

She went to school in Portland and was a homemaker.

She raised her family in Yakima and then moved to Spokane 15 years ago.

She was a member of Crossover Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Charles.

Survivors include two sons, Harmon Clark of Spokane and Brian Clark of Sitka, Alaska; a brother, Donald Obert of Mattawa, Wash.; two sisters, Zadah Thaves of Marysville, Wash., and Eva Simmons of Clinton, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

George Guest

Spokane

Memorial gathering for George F. Guest, 53, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474, 3004 E. Queen Ave. Community Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Guest, who died Monday, was born in Spokane.

He served 27 years in the military, first with the Air Force in civil engineering followed by the Washington Air National Guard in the medical field.

After retiring from the military, he was employed by White’s boots manufacturing.

Mr. Guest was affiliated with the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Jahn; a son, Brendan Guest of Spokane; a daughter, Jennifer Steinlage of Germany; a brother, Brian Guest; and his parents, Dale and Ruth Guest.

Clifford Stafford

Otis Orchards

Service for Clifford Eugene Stafford, 82, was Wednesday Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stafford, who was born in Goldfield, Iowa, died Friday.

He grew up and attended school in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and married Doris Warren in 1946.

He was a World War II veteran, having served with the Army’s 88th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy from December 1942 until February 1946.

He retired in 1984 after 37 years at Inland Empire Paper Co. in Millwood.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Doris; a son, Kenneth Stafford; a daughter, Beverly Walker; a sister, Joan Rickaby; and four grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Edith Voss

Colville

Inurnment for Edith Viola Voss, 85, will be at a later date. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Voss, who was born in New York , died July 15 at Pinewood Terrace Nursing Center in Colville, where she had resided the past four years.

During World War II, she served in the Women’s Army Corps.

Mrs. Voss worked as a beautician and a cook.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and enjoyed cooking and quilting.

She lived in Metaline Falls prior to residing the Colville.

Survivors include a son, Lonnie Voss of Ione; two sisters, Louise and Peggy, both of California; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Karl Bjorklund

Spokane

Graveside service for Karl F. Bjorklund, 35, will be today at 10 a.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park, with memorial service at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bjorklund, who died July 18, was born in Seattle. He was a resident of Spokane for the past 35 years.

He was a spray technician at Senske Lawn and Tree Care and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his companion, Lisa Keeler; his parents, Stanley and Kathleen Bjorklund of Spokane; a sister, Lisa Piacqudio; and a brother, Erik Bjorklund of Issaquah, Wash.

David Mills

Spokane

No local service is planned for David W. Mills, 47. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mills, who was born in New Jersey, died Sunday. He was a resident of Spokane for 15 years.

He had been employed as a laborer and radio sports announcer. He had served in the Army.

Survivors include three sisters, Patricia Brooks of Florida and Antoinette Golomb and Barbara Griffin, both of New Jersey; and a brother, Robert J. Mills of Georgia.
