Sunday’s A.L. games
Yankees 2, Rangers 1: At New York, Mike Mussina took a shutout into the ninth inning and Jason Giambi homered in his return from the disabled list, leading the Yankees over Texas. Bernie Williams, batting leadoff for the first time in eight years because captain Derek Jeter sat out for the second straight day with a pulled right groin, homered on the first pitch of the fourth inning from Ryan Drese to help the Yankees win for the 11th time in 13 games.
Orioles 5, Devil Rays 4: At Baltimore, Rodrigo Lopez won his second straight start and Rafael Palmeiro and Javy Lopez both had two hits and scored twice, leading the Orioles past Tampa Bay. B.J. Surhoff drove in two runs for the Orioles, who had lost four in a row since Lopez beat Boston on Monday.
Twins 6, Tigers 5: At Minneapolis, Joe Mauer hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot with two outs in the eighth inning to help Minnesota beat Detroit. Mauer connected on a 3-1 pitch from Esteban Yan (0-2), capping a two-out rally and giving the slumping Twins a 6-3 lead. Minnesota held on in the ninth for its first series victory after four straight defeats.
Red Sox 5, Royals 3: At Kansas City, Mo., Johnny Damon hit a tiebreaking double in a five-run sixth inning, and Boston rallied for a victory over the Royals. Mike Sweeney hit a two-run homer for Kansas City.
Athletics 8, Blue Jays 3: At Oakland, Calif., Eric Byrnes’ leadoff home run sparked a four-run first inning, and the Athletics went on to beat Toronto. Damian Miller added a two-run single in the first and Scott Hatteberg broke open the game with a three-run double in the seventh.
Indians 7, Angels 0: At Anaheim, Calif., C.C. Sabathia held the Angels hitless until the sixth inning, and Omar Vizquel hit a two-run homer in Cleveland’s victory.
