Weeklong vacation Bible school starting soon

Now that school has ended for the year, it’s time for churches to crank up their vacation Bible schools. Planning often starts weeks in advance for the weeklong sessions of Bible-based games and activities. The sessions give kids something constructive to do, which is good for the kids as well as their parents.

The VBS sessions included below are but the first to come. Many other Valley churches will offer the camps as the summer continues.

•”Son Games 2004” will be held at Dishman Baptist Church June 21-25. The VBS is patterned after the Olympics and will include games, international snacks and crafts. Daily sessions for kids in preschool through the sixth grade will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Registration for the free event is required, but can be done on the first day. To register in advance, contact the church office at 926-0575. The church is at 315 N. Argonne Road.

•The theme at Opportunity Presbyterian Church is also “Son Games 2004.” The mix of games, crafts and snacks offered June 21-25 is open to children from age 3 up to those entering fifth grade in the fall. Daily sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

The cost is $8 per child with a maximum of $20 per family. Advance registration is encouraged because of limited space. Call the church, 202 N. Pines Road, at 924-9750 to register.

•The Tri-Parish VBS will also take place June 21-25. St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection will join to offer “Camp Creation” from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Preschool children will attend Good Shepherd, 810 S. Sullivan Road. Children in grades 1 and 2 will be at ECOR, 15319 E. Eighth, and grades 3 through 5 will be at St. Mary’s, 304 S. Adams Road. A dessert potluck scheduled for 6 p.m. June 24 will be held at St. Mary’s.

Scheduled activities include music, games, Bible stories and crafts. The cost is $15, and advance registration is recommended. The churches can be reached at 926-8611 (Good Shepherd), 926-6450 (Church of the Resurrection) and 928-3210 (St. Mary’s).

Summer worship schedules

•Sunday worship at Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will now begin at 9:30 a.m. each week. The schedule will continue through Labor Day weekend.

The church also plans to kick off summer with a barbecue Sunday after the worship service. The cost is $2.50 per person.

•Worship now starts at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday at Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road.

•The Sunday schedule at Opportunity Christian Church now includes an education hour at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m. each week. The church is at 708 N. Pines Road.

Casual weekly worship

Three Lutheran churches are banding together to offer informal midweek worship services during the summer. The services will begin at 7 p.m. each Wednesday at rotating locations.

All June services will be at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2511 S. Pines Road. The July services will be hosted by Christ Lutheran Church, 13009 E. Broadway Ave., and the August services will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran, 810 S. Sullivan Road. A final service will be held Sept. 1 at Holy Trinity. Casual attire is welcome.
