Wyatt homers as Georgia tips Georgia Tech

Jonathan Wyatt hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Georgia beat Georgia Tech 5-3 on Saturday to sweep the NCAA super regional in Atlanta, and reach the College World Series.

Wyatt’s homer – the first of his freshman season – gave the Bulldogs (43-21) their second trip to Omaha, Neb., in the last four years.

Bo Lanier (4-1) pitched the eighth in relief of Sean Ruthven, who allowed only Mike Trapani’s two-run double in seven innings. That gave the Yellow Jackets (44-21) a 2-1 lead, but Georgia scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the best-of-3 series 2-0.

Wyatt, a little-used outfielder inserted into the lineup in place of Kyle Keen, finished 3 for 4. His home run came off Brian Burks (8-6), who took over for Andrew Kown in the seventh.

Long Beach St. 9, Arizona 4: At Long Beach, Calif., Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run homer for the 49ers to force a third game in the best-of-3 series.

The 49ers scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning off starter Kevin Guyette to take a 5-3 lead. Tulowitzki started off their four-run seventh inning with a homer that chased Guyette (6-7).

Cesar Ramos (12-4) allowed four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Long Beach (40-20) last played in the CWS in 1998. Arizona (34-25-1) hasn’t played at Omaha, Neb., since winning the 1986 NCAA championship.

Cal State Fullerton 9, Tulane 0: At Fullerton, Calif., Jason Windsor pitched eight shutout innings, and the Titans (41-21) pounded out 19 hits in the opening game of the super regional.

Windsor (11-4) gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked none. Clark Hardman and Felipe Garcia both had three hits, and every Titans starter had at least one hit.

Brian Bogusevic (9-6) took the loss for the Green Wave (41-20).

The Titans, who have won 28 of their last 33, have advanced to the CWS 12 times – winning the national title in 1979, `84 and `95.

Tulane (41-20) is 0-7 against Cal State Fullerton all-time, and has reached the CWS only in 2001.

Miami 8, Florida 7: At Coral Gables, Fla., the Hurricanes scored six unearned runs on five Gators errors then held on to win the opening game of the best-of-3 super regional.

Leading 5-4 entering the seventh, the Hurricanes (48-11) scored three runs on three errors, two by Gators starter Justin Hoyman (11-2) on sacrifice attempts.

The Gators’ Justin Tordi hit a two-run homer and C.J. Smith had an RBI double in the eight but reliever Danny Gil struck out Ben Harrison to end inning with the tying run on second.

Gil then pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Ricky Orta (2-0) got two outs for the win.

Florida (43-21) also made several miscues on the basepaths, including having a runner picked off third with no outs in the second and a runner caught off second on a flyout for an inning-ending double play in the sixth.

Arkansas 4, Florida St. 2: At Fayetteville, Ark., Charley Boyce held the Seminoles (45-23) to one run in 5 2/3 innings and Jake Dugger homered and drove in two runs to send the Razorbacks (45-22) to the College World Series.

Boyce (10-2) allowed five hits and hit three batters before he was relieved by Trey Holloway.

Eddie Cannon (9-7) pitched into the ninth inning, retiring 16 of 17 at one point, but allowed four runs, though just two were earned. He gave up six hits and struck out six.

Stephen Drew, a first-round pick in baseball’s amateur draft this week, finished the series 1 for 9. The Razorbacks set an NCAA Super Regional attendance record for an on-campus game with 10,027 at Baum Stadium.

Texas 10, Vanderbilt 2: At Austin, Texas, the top-seeded Longhorns clinched their third straight trip to the CWS with a sweep of the Commodores.

After beating Vanderbilt 15-3 in Friday’s opener of the super regional, the Longhorns (55-13) jumped ahead in the first inning Saturday on Curtis Thigpen’s home run. Thigpen finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Drew Stubbs’ two-run homer off Ryan Mullins (9-2) in the fourth made it 4-0, but Vanderbilt (45-19) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to pull to 4-2.

The Longhorns, headed to their 31st CWS, added a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

Sam LeCure (9-3) gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings while striking out five for the win.

South Carolina 4, East Carolina 2: At Columbia, S.C., Matt Campbell pitched five shutout innings for South Carolina before a long rain delay forced him out.

The Gamecocks (49-15) have won 17 of 19 and are just one win away from their third straight trip to the CWS.

South Carolina took a 2-0 lead on Landon Powell’s RBI single and Steven Tolleson’s bunt before a 4-hour, 28-minute rain delay after the fifth inning.

Campbell (10-4) allowed four hits and struck out six.

The Pirates (51-12) stranded six runners in the first five innings. Greg Bunn (10-1) allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out eight over five innings.

LSU 11, Texas A&M 8: At Baton Rouge, La., J.C. Holt and Ryan Patterson each homered and drove in three runs to lead the Tigers (45-17) past the Aggies (42-21) in the series opener.

The Aggies took a 5-0 lead in the first inning against starter Nate Bumstead.

Jason Determann (6-4), got the win with six innings of relief. He allowed three runs, two earned.
