A glance at Thursday’s opening round in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Country Club in Southampton, N.Y.:

Leading: Jay Haas and Shigeki Maruyama, with 4-under 66s.

Just behind: Six players at 68, including British Open champion Ben Curtis and Kevin Stadler, son of 1982 Masters winner Craig Stadler.

Still out there: 57 players will finish their opening rounds Friday morning after a thunderstorm interrupted play for 2 hours and 12 minutes in the afternoon and then fog finally suspended play at 7:40 p.m. EDT.

Contending on the course: Angel Cabrera was 4-under-par through 12 holes, while Phil Mickelson was 2 under through 15 and Vijay Singh was 2 under through 14.

Where’s Tiger?: Tiger Woods made only one birdie in shooting an opening 2-over 72. Woods has never won a tournament after shooting over par in the first round.

Not ready for seniors: If Jay Haas wins, he would be the oldest Open champ at 50. Hale Irwin was 45 when he won in 1990.

Shot of the day: Spencer Levin, a 20-year-old amateur qualifier, made a hole in one on the 179-yard 17th hole.

Noteworthy: David Duval, playing for the first time since last year, shot an 83.

Quoteworthy: “How many times has anyone played great in the U.S. Open?” — David Duval.
