NBC’s ‘Apollo at 70’ worth a look

Joel Brown New York Times Syndicate

It’s kind of a slow weekend, but there’s at least one show on each night that’s worth watching.

Tonight it’s NBC’s 8 p.m. special, “Apollo at 70: Hot Night in Harlem.” Everyone from Ashanti to Bob Dylan to Branford Marsalis to Slick Rick turns up to celebrate the historic New York theater, which has been for most of those seven decades a touchstone for the nation’s African Americans and anyone who loves great art and entertainment.

Music! Comedy! Fun! The best part may be the historic clips; wait for James Brown to light that rocket, uh-huh!

Then, on Sunday, it’s the second episode of the new season of “Six Feet Under,” on HBO at 9. It’s true that this family-funeral-home drama can be a little too in love with itself, with the angst and melodrama enveloping the Fisher family and its own black-comic twists. But the acting is top-notch, and there’s little else on TV except “The Sopranos” that actually deals with sex, death and the dilemma of being alive.

Sunday night, no doubt, Nate will still be dealing with the complex emotions of grief, relief and guilt brought on by wife Lisa’s death. David and Keith will be putting their relationship back together while Keith gets a new job in celebrity security.

And Claire will still be trying for that artistic and personal breakthrough. Everyone, especially the slightly creepy employee Arthur, will still be adjusting to matriarch Ruth’s new marriage to George.

And someone, of course, will die.
