Fumes clear WSU library

Associated Press

PULLMAN – The Holland Library at Washington State University was evacuated, and three people were hospitalized after noxious fumes were reported Monday morning.

Employees in the building reported burning feelings while breathing fumes with an ammonia-like odor, WSU officials said.

“The fumes were strong, and I called 911. I asked someone to pull the fire alarm to evacuate the building,” library staff member Linda Snook said.

One person was treated and released from Pullman Memorial Hospital, and two others remained for observation on Monday afternoon. Paramedics treated 10 others at the scene for breathing difficulties.

The building was searched, and firefighters could not find the source of the fumes. The building was ventilated and reopened at noon Monday.

“It was a strong caustic or base smell. I can’t put my finger on it exactly,” said Gary Wutzke, who was doing drywall work in the library.

Construction crews have been working in the building for several weeks, replacing carpet and hanging drywall. School officials do not believe they are responsible for the fumes.
