Yankees 11, Red Sox 3: Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer, Tony Clark hit a rare drive into the center-field bleachers and Javier Vazquez beat Boston for the first time in his career, leading New York to a home win before a sellout crowd of 55,231. The Yankees, who went 1-6 against Boston in April and dropped 4 1/2 games out of first, opened a season-high 6 1/2 -game lead over the second-place Red Sox in the A.L. East.

White Sox 6, Twins 2: At Minneapolis, Mark Buehrle (8-2) pitched eight sharp innings as visiting Chicago defeated Minnesota to take over first place in the A.L. Central. Buehrle improved to 13-4 in his career against the Twins.

Tigers 9, Indians 7 (11): Dmitri Young’s two-run homer in the 11th gave Detroit its season-high fifth consecutive win, at the expense of visiting Cleveland.

Blue Jays 4, Devils Rays 0: Ted Lilly (7-4) won his fifth consecutive road decision and Eric Hinske stole home, leading Toronto past Tampa Bay at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Royals 4, Orioles 3: At Kansas City, Mo., Desi Relaford hit a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth, and Kansas City topped Baltimore to snap a five-game losing skid.

Athletics 5, Angels 4: Bobby Crosby hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh to help Mark Mulder (10-2) win his eighth consecutive decision, and Oakland defeated Anaheim at Oakland, Calif.
