Shadle qualifies for district

Darin Holcomb homered twice and pitched four innings to earn the win as Shadle Park qualified for postseason by edging host and league champion East Valley 9-8 in Greater Spokane League baseball Friday.

Holcomb struck out six and drove in five runs. Reliever Brian Kranches stranded a runner at first base in the seventh with a strikeout on a 3-2 count.

Shadle (12-8, 10-8), the defending league, district and regional champion, will open District 8 4A play at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Avista Stadium against the GSL’s No. 3.

The third, fourth and fifth seeds won’t be finalized until the outcome of today’s Mead at Mt. Spokane game. Mt. Spokane (14-5, 13-4) has clinched the No. 2 seed and, with EV (17-3, 15-3), has a district bye until Friday. Mead (11-7, 11-6) will either tie North Central (13-7, 12-6) for third place or Ferris (13-7, 11-7) for fourth. Either tie will be determined by a coin flip.

In other GSL games, Chris Bozo struck out seven and threw a four-hitter as Ferris defeated host Lewis and Clark 6-2, knocking the Tigers (10-10, 9-9) out of contention. Matt McClenny and Pat Burke were both 2 for 4 with two runs for Ferris. LC (and University) finished one game behind Shadle. … Casey VanSickle struck out seven and Matt Fuller had two RBIs as U-Hi (9-11, 9-9) posted a 6-4 win over visiting Central Valley (9-11, 8-10). U-Hi’s Ben Gregory had an RBI double and scored twice… . Logan Davenport struck out 15 and Nate Farr homered and had five RBIs to carry NC to a 12-2 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (4-16, 4-14). NC’s Billy Fletcher had three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the fourth.

Dan Bowman (6-1) pitched six no-hit innings and Matt Dinsmore had five RBIs as Lakeside (15-6) defeated Colville 10-1 in the Great Northern League championship game at Avista Stadium. Bowman struck out five and allowed no earned runs. Dinsmore had a two-run double in the fourth and a two-run single in the seventh. Lakeside won its third consecutive GNL title, and fourth out of five seasons. Lakeside and Colville (15-6) will host District 7 2A second-round games on Wednesday. … Also in the GNL, Hunter Simpson (7-2) pitched a five-hitter, with seven strikeouts and no walks, and added three RBIs as Pullman (15-5) earned the No. 3 seed with a 9-0 win over Newport (11-9) at Avista. Pullman’s David Cofer doubled, tripled and had three RBIs. Pullman will host No. 6 Medical Lake (11-10) at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out district opener. At the same time, No. 4 Newport will host No. 5 Chewelah (11-10). … A.J. Proszek (6-3) pitched a one-hitter, facing just one batter more than the minimum, and Ty Washington had an RBI single in the first as host Chewelah eliminated Deer Park 1-0. Proszek struck out 11, walked none and allowed Aaron Bly’s leadoff single in the first. Kyle Smith, Casey Christian and Washington had consecutive singles off Ian Mitchell of the Stags (1-18) in the first… . Jeff Day struck out 10 and finished 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI to power Medical Lake to a 9-2 win that eliminated visiting Riverside (3-16). ML’s Jake Gamble went 2 for 4 with two runs, and Buddy Wood of the Rams went 2 for 4.

Andrew Czapla (7-0) struck out 13 and Joey Edwards earned the save with a scoreless seventh as St. Michael’s (16-1) defeated visiting Republic 6-4 in the championship game of the Panorama League tournament. The Warriors clinched a State B berth and will play for seeding on May 17 at Avista Stadium. Republic (14-3) will host fourth-seeded Springdale (10-10) and Bi-County League No. 3 Almira/Coulee-Hartline during District 7 play on Thursday… . In other Panorama playoffs, Northport (15-3) earned the No. 3 seed as Matt Beckman (9-1) struck out eight during a 12-3 win over Springdale. Northport will travel to Bi-County No. 2, either Davenport or Wilbur-Creston, on Thursday, and play the Panorama No. 5. St. George’s (8-10) and the Bi-County No. 4, either Reardan or Odessa, will meet Monday at Riverside to determine Northport’s rival… . Springdale opened the day with a 7-1 win over Selkirk, as Mike Whitney struck out 13 and pitched a two-hitter. … Scott Patten pitched a three-hitter and James Fischer had a two-run single as St. George’s eliminated Selkirk (9-10) 5-4.

Softball

Stephanie Trudeau pitched a two-hitter, striking out 12, to lead Shadle Park (15-4, 15-3) to a 6-0 win at Central Valley in the GSL. The Bears (9-9, 9-9) committed eight errors… . Also in the league, Lyndsay Weber’s two-run single highlighted a three-run fifth as Gonzaga Prep (11-8, 10-8) rallied for a 4-2 win over visiting Lewis and Clark (12-7, 11-7). Megan O’Doherty of the Bullpups added an RBI single in the sixth. LC scored its runs on a two-out infield error in the first. Winner Michelle Tully struck out three and walked two. G-Prep has clinched at least third place in the National Division and has an outside shot at tying LC for second… . Freshman Jessi Labish scattered six hits, and Cami Jones and Brooke Woodard both finished 2 for 3 as host Cheney (3-16, 3-15) surprised Rogers 3-0. Shannon Carlon of the Pirates (8-11, 7-11) finished 2 for 3… . Kayci Thivierge homered and tripled, and Kristin Wilson pitched a six-hitter to guide Clarkston (7-12, 7-11) to an 8-1 win over visiting North Central (3-16, 3-15).

Whitney Loan homered in both games as Colville (13-2, 12-0) clinched the Great Northern League title with a 13-0, 10-0 sweep at Newport (3-15, 0-12). Melissa Rice pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Stephanie Day followed with a four-hitter. Day finished the day with four hits, including two doubles and a homer… . Also in the GNL, Alli Fischer had three RBIs in the opener and singled home the winning run in the eighth inning of the second game as second-place Pullman (13-3, 9-3) registered an 8-0, 1-0 sweep of visiting Deer Park (4-13, 2-10). Pullman’s Kelly Thornton struck out 12 and walked one in the opener… . Monica Judd started and won the opener, won the second game in relief, and tripled home the second-game winning run in the seventh as Lakeside (9-8, 8-4) moved up to third place with a 6-3, 4-3 sweep of visiting Medical Lake (4-14, 4-8) at Nine Mile Falls. Judd had an RBI single during a three-run eighth in the opener. Emily Carpenter’s fielder’s choice provided the go-ahead run. ML’s Charlotte Psick hit a solo homer in the fourth. Judd left the bases loaded in the sixth of the second game.

Boys soccer

Nick DeGraffenreid scored three goals, giving him 21 for the season, as Pullman (11-3-1, 9-3, 26 points) wrapped up the GNL season with a 4-0 win at Chewelah (1-12, 1-11). Pullman earned the No. 3 seed to the District 7 2A tournament and will host the No. 6 in a loser-out opener at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Chewelah and Lakeside will play a tiebreaker today to determine the sixth seed. Tuesday’s other loser-out opener is No. 5 Deer Park (5-10) at No. 4 Colville (11-5). Top-seeded Medical Lake (11-5) and No. 2 Riverside (9-4) will host second-round matches on Thursday.

Idaho softball

Heather Helmhout and Jenna DeLong tossed back-to-back, five-inning one-hitters as Coeur d’Alene wrapped up a perfect regular season with a 10-0, 10-0 sweep of visiting Moscow in the Inland Empire League.

Helmhout (14-0) struck out two and walked none. DeLong tripled twice and had two runs batted in, and Brianna Robson went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

DeLong fanned five, walked two and had a two-run single in the first inning of the second game. Shelli Dodge went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Vikings (24-0, 20-0) will host Tuesday’s 5A Region I tournament. Third-seeded Lewiston (15-8) will play No. 2 Lake City (16-8) at 2 p.m. in a loser-out game. The winner will meet CdA at 4 for a berth to state.

Moscow (4-22, 3-17) will host Sandpoint (2-20) at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out opener of the 4A Region I tourney. The winner will travel to top-seeded Post Falls (10-14) on Thursday.
